Nigeria Plagued By Self-Centred Leaders Who Need To Step Aside – Obasanjo

    Share

Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, has voiced concerns over the ongoing socioeconomic and political situation in the country. According to Obasanjo, the root of the problem lies in a leadership deficit, and he believes that the only solution is for the current crop of “self-centred” leaders to step aside.

Obasanjo made these remarks in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, on Saturday. He was speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the Leadership Empowerment International Conference (LEIC).

During the event, 25 distinguished Nigerians were awarded honorary Doctorate degrees in leadership by the South Africa-based Immanuel Theology Institute International, in collaboration with the Priesthood Leadership Development Initiative Inc.

The former president did not mince words as he criticized the current leaders, whom he described as being more interested in personal gain than in serving the nation. He stated that the lack of effective leadership is preventing Nigeria from moving forward.

“Nigeria is plagued at all levels by a band of self-centred leaders who lack knowledge and understanding,” Obasanjo said. “Their style of leadership does not prioritize service, which is essential for development.”

He went on to challenge Nigerians to end the culture of electing leaders who are more interested in transactions and personal gains than in transforming the country and delivering good governance. He urged citizens to seek out leaders who are committed to serving the people and improving the nation.

Obasanjo emphasised that leadership is a lifelong responsibility. He said that no one is ever too old to lead or to contribute to their community, state, country, continent, or the world. “There is no end to leadership and service to your community until you breathe your last,” he said.

When asked what he believes is the main problem facing Nigeria today, Obasanjo was clear: “If you ask me in one word, what is the bane of Nigeria today? I will not think about it twice. I will say it is leadership.”

He argued that if Nigeria could get its leadership right, everything else would fall into place. He praised the efforts of the Leadership Empowerment International Conference for focusing on good leadership and urged them to continue encouraging and promoting good leadership at every level of Nigerian society.

Obasanjo also commended Prof. Olusesi Obateye, the International Coordinator of the Priesthood Leadership Development Initiative Inc., and Prof. Van Den Berg Edward Alfred, the President of the South Africa-based Immanuel Theology Institute International, for their efforts in recognizing and encouraging leadership in Nigeria.

Earlier in the event, Prof. Olusesi Obateye spoke on the theme of the conference, “Responsible and Responsive Leadership.” He expressed concern about the shortage of good leaders in Nigeria, stating that this has been a major obstacle to the country’s development since it gained independence nearly 64 years ago.

Obateye’s sentiments echoed those of Obasanjo, as he lamented the leadership challenges facing Nigeria. He emphasized that the absence of responsible and responsive leadership has hindered the country’s progress and contributed to its ongoing challenges.

The event also recognized and honored several individuals for their contributions to leadership in Nigeria. Among those who received honorary Doctorate degrees were three former Commissioners in Ogun State: Engr. Anthony Ojeshina, Hon. Kehinde Sogunle, and Hon. Dele Obadina. Also honored were Chief Joju Fadairo, a former State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Engr. Oluwatoyin Jokosenumi, a former Director at the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The Leadership Empowerment International Conference brought together leaders from various sectors to discuss the importance of leadership in Nigeria’s development. The event aimed to inspire a new generation of leaders who are committed to serving the country and improving the lives of its citizens.
