Tensions in the Julius Berger area of Abuja turned deadly on Sunday as a violent confrontation erupted between members of the El Zakzaky movement, commonly known as the Shiites, and officers from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.

The clash resulted in the deaths of ten individuals, including police officers, and left several others injured.

The violence broke out when members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), identified as Shiites, allegedly attacked a police checkpoint at Wuse Junction.

The confrontation led to severe damage, with three police patrol vehicles set ablaze during the skirmish. The clash caused significant disruptions to traffic in the area, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes to avoid the violence.

Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command, confirmed the incident and provided details on the casualties. “The proscribed group attacked the police checkpoint unprovoked,” Adeh stated.

“As a result, two police officers were killed, and three others were left unconscious and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital. Additionally, three patrol vehicles were destroyed.”

The police response was swift and intense as officers engaged the attackers to regain control of the area. Despite the fierce battle, the FCT Police Command has managed to bring the situation under control.

The Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, condemned the attack and vowed to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

“Several arrests have been made,” Adeh continued. “The Commissioner of Police has condemned the attack and promised that those involved will face justice. The situation is currently under control, and normalcy has been restored to the area.”

The police are maintaining high alert in the region to prevent further outbreaks of violence. They have assured the public that they are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary.

The IMN, also known as the Shiites, is a group that has been involved in several clashes with security forces in Nigeria. The group, which follows the teachings of Sheikh Ibraheem El Zakzaky, has faced various legal and security challenges over the years.

The IMN was officially proscribed by the Nigerian government in 2019 due to violent clashes and allegations of terrorism. The group has been known for its protests and demonstrations, often demanding the release of its leader, Sheikh El Zakzaky, who has been in detention for several years.

The violent clash has had a considerable impact on the local community. In addition to the loss of life and injuries, the destruction of police vehicles and disruption of traffic have affected daily life in the affected area.
