Opinion: Oshiomhole Should Learn to Talk Like a Statesman

    Share

In recent weeks, the Nigerian political scene has been stirred by another controversial statement from former Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

Known for his blunt and often provocative remarks, Oshiomhole’s latest comments on childlessness have sparked outrage and drawn criticism from various quarters.

His remarks, which were directed at the First Lady of Nigeria, Betsy Obaseki, and the Governor of Edo State, are not only disrespectful but also unbecoming of a man who has held high office and is expected to exhibit statesmanship.

The storm began when Oshiomhole made derogatory comments about the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, and Governor Godwin Obaseki, who has been a central figure in Oshiomhole’s recent controversies.

At a campaign event, Oshiomhole insulted and mocked the First Lady and Governor Obaseki by referring to their childlessness.

He suggested that their lack of children was somehow a flaw or a reason for their failures in public service.

Oshiomhole’s remarks were more than just an offhand comment. They were a direct attack on the personal lives of individuals who have chosen to serve the public in very demanding roles.

While indeed it is true that the First Lady threw the first salvo by highlighting the single status of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party’s governorship candidates.

Instead of engaging in a substantive discussion about critical issues, the Edo State first lady engaged in personal matters.

However, Oshiomhole went quite low in his response, which was both unnecessary and cruel.

Oshiomhole’s latest comments are just the latest in a series of statements that have demonstrated a lack of respect and statesmanship.

He has previously been known for his blunt and often insensitive remarks. For instance, there was the time when he told a poor trader, whose stall had been demolished by the state, to “go to hell.”

Such remarks have consistently undermined his credibility and tarnished his reputation. By every measure, Oshiomhole is a distinguished statesman, as a former governor, senator and former president of the Nigeria Labour Congress.

This pattern of behaviour reveals a troubling attitude towards public discourse and the treatment of others, especially those in vulnerable positions.

Oshiomhole seems to have developed a habit of making statements that are not only inflammatory but also deeply disrespectful.

This is especially concerning given his status as a former governor and a prominent figure in Nigerian politics.

The comments about childlessness are particularly egregious because they touch upon deeply personal aspects of individuals’ lives.

Children are a gift from God, and not everyone is blessed with them, regardless of their public or private success.

It is important to understand that childlessness is not a reflection of one’s worth or competence.

People should not be mocked or belittled for something they have no control over.

In a country like Nigeria, where personal matters often become public fodder for political attacks, it is crucial for our leaders to demonstrate empathy and respect.

Making fun of or criticising someone for their inability to have children is not only unkind but also reveals a lack of basic decency.

As a former governor, Oshiomhole should be setting an example of dignified conduct and statesmanship.

Leaders are expected to rise above petty squabbles and focus on issues that affect the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

They should be role models for how to engage in civil discourse, even when they disagree with others.

Statesmanship involves more than just holding a position of power; it requires a commitment to acting with honour and respect towards others.

It means addressing public issues with maturity and avoiding personal attacks that do nothing to advance the public good.

Oshiomhole’s recent behaviour undermines the principles of statesmanship and fails to reflect the dignity expected from someone of his stature.

It is time for Oshiomhole to reassess his approach to public discourse. Instead of using his platform to belittle and mock, he should focus on contributing positively to national conversations.

There are many pressing issues facing Nigeria today, including economic challenges, security concerns, and social inequalities.

When leaders resort to personal insults and mockery, they not only harm those targeted but also contribute to a culture of disrespect and division.

By contrast, showing respect for others, regardless of personal differences, helps to foster a more inclusive and positive public discourse.

As a prominent figure, Oshiomhole should learn to speak and act with the statesmanship that his position demands, setting a positive example for others to follow.

Engaging constructively in these discussions would be far more beneficial to the nation than indulging in personal attacks.

Leaders and public figures must recognise the impact of their words and actions.
