Justin Madubuike, the standout defensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens, has announced that he will now go by his Nigerian-given name, Nnamdi.

This decision reflects a deep connection to his heritage and a desire to honor his roots.

Madubuike, who gained recognition for his impressive performance last season, led all NFL defensive tackles with 13 sacks.

His decision to adopt his traditional name is influenced by a growing sense of pride in his Nigerian heritage.

“Coming from Nigerian culture, our parents give us an American name and a Nigerian name,” Madubuike said.

“When we were growing up as little kids, they addressed us by our Nigerian name. So Nnamdi, I believe in my heart, that’s my real name.”

The 26-year-old defensive tackle was a third-round pick by the Ravens in 2020 from Texas A&M.

His stellar performance earned him a Second Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection in 2023.

In March 2024, he signed a four-year, $98 million extension with the Ravens, solidifying his status as one of the top players in his position.

Madubuike’s decision to embrace his Nigerian name was partly inspired by his teammate, Odafe Oweh, who also has Nigerian roots.

Oweh, who was originally named Jayson, adopted his Nigerian name after being drafted in 2021.

Madubuike noted that Oweh’s decision influenced him to reconsider his own name choice.

“I saw how Odafe embraced his Nigerian heritage, and it made me think about my own identity,” Madubuike said. “I felt it was time for me to do the same.”

The transition to using his Nigerian name is more than just a personal preference for Madubuike.

It represents a cultural statement and a reclaiming of his identity.

He explained that while he was growing up, his parents always called him Nnamdi.

However, as he entered school and became more integrated into American society, the name Justin, which appears on his birth certificate, became more commonly used.

“Even though my parents always called me Nnamdi, in school and outside the home, I was known as Justin,” Madubuike said.

“When my father, Festus, supported the name change, it made me feel even more confident about making this decision.”

The Ravens’ defensive tackle has already made the change on his Instagram account and updated the nameplate above his locker to reflect his new choice.

This gesture is a testament to his commitment to honoring his roots and staying true to himself.
