Electricity Workers VowTo Shut Down National Grid After Ajaero’s Arrest

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has issued a strike alert, threatening a shutdown of the national grid in response to the recent arrest of Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). The NUEE’s call for action comes after Ajaero was detained by the Department of State Security (DSS) on Monday.

The labour leader was later released same day, shortly before midnight.

Acting General Secretary Igwebike Dominic released a statement on Monday, outlining the union’s position. The statement emphasized that the arrest of Ajaero is unacceptable and that the union demands his immediate and unconditional release.

The arrest occurred as Ajaero was en route to attend the Trade Union Congress (TUC) UK conference at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. According to reports, Ajaero was apprehended by DSS officials before he could board his flight.

In response to the arrest, the NUEE has voiced strong criticism. The union argues that the detention of Ajaero represents an attack on free expression and collective rights.

The NUEE has placed all its members on high alert. The union is prepared to take further action if Ajaero is not released promptly. This includes the possibility of a nationwide strike that could severely impact the electricity sector.

The NLC warned that failure to release Ajaero could lead to widespread protests and strikes across the country. The NLC’s warning highlights the potential for significant disruptions if the situation is not resolved quickly.
