Randy Waldrum has officially resigned as the head coach of Nigeria’s Super Falcons, ending his tenure with the national team.

Waldrum, who assumed the role in 2020, cited his wife’s ongoing health challenges as the primary reason for his decision.

In a heartfelt statement released on Monday, Waldrum expressed the difficulty of the past few weeks, particularly following the recent Olympic Games.

“It’s been a very difficult few weeks following the Olympics, with my wife’s health issues, and the worries that obviously come with that,” Waldrum said.

After careful consideration, Waldrum concluded that stepping down was the best course of action for both his family and the team.

He emphasized that his resignation would provide the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with ample time to find a suitable replacement to lead the Super Falcons.

“This will allow the NFF ample time to find the next manager to take over this incredible squad,” Waldrum added.

The 67-year-old coach had a notable stint with the Super Falcons, guiding them through a significant period of competition and transition.

Before joining the Super Falcons, Waldrum had a successful career with Trinidad and Tobago and managed various teams in women’s football.

His resignation comes on the heels of the Super Falcons’ performance in the 2024 Olympic Games, where his final match in charge was a group stage encounter against Japan.

During his time with the Super Falcons, Waldrum also held a concurrent position with the Pittsburgh Panthers, balancing both roles effectively.

Waldrum’s departure marks the end of a challenging but eventful chapter for the Super Falcons, who have seen significant changes and challenges under his leadership.

His time with the team was characterized by a mix of highs and lows, as he worked to build and strengthen the squad amidst various pressures and expectations.

The NFF will now begin the search for a new head coach who can continue to develop and lead the Super Falcons as they prepare for future competitions.
