The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has issued a strong advisory urging Nigerians living in Lebanon to leave the country immediately due to increasing tensions and violence.
This call comes as Israel continues its military operations against Hezbollah and other targets in Lebanon.
On Wednesday, NIDCOM expressed deep concern for the safety of Nigerians in Lebanon.
The advisory was signed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit.
“Nigerians resident in Lebanon should consider moving out of the country now that commercial flights are still in operation,” the statement read.
The Commission acknowledged reports indicating that many Nigerians had already relocated from the southern parts of Lebanon, which are more affected by the violence.
The current conflict has its roots in the long-standing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, a group with significant influence in Lebanon.
Hezbollah has been engaged in combat against Israeli forces, especially in support of Hamas, which has been in conflict with Israel since the recent escalation of violence.
According to an Israeli military statement, eight Israeli soldiers were killed in combat in southern Lebanon on the same day NIDCOM issued its warning.
The situation has created an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear for many residents, including foreign nationals.
NIDCOM reassured families in Nigeria that there have been no reports of injuries or accidents involving Nigerians in Lebanon so far.
However, the Commission strongly advised all citizens to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety.
“It is gratifying to note that thus far, no Nigerian has witnessed any form of accident or injury,” the advisory stated.
NIDCOM also urged Nigerians to remain in contact with the Nigerian Embassy in Lebanon for guidance on safety measures and evacuation options.
The safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad remain a top priority for the Nigerian government.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emphasised the need for effective support for citizens in crisis situations.
In the advisory, NIDCOM assured citizens that their well-being is of utmost concern to the President and the government.
“Nigerians are advised to liaise with our Embassy in Lebanon for necessary guidance regarding their safety,” the statement noted.
Nigerians living in Lebanon have expressed mixed feelings about the advisory.
