Former Nigerian senator and outspoken activist, Shehu Sani, has raised serious concerns about the global consequences of a potential second presidency for Donald Trump. In a detailed post on social media, Sani outlined a range of issues that he believes will emerge if Trump returns to the White House in 2024.
According to Sani, key groups, including African migrants, international institutions, and diplomatic relations between the US and several countries, will face significant challenges under Trump’s leadership. He warns that Trump’s policies could lead to a more divided world, with increased tensions between the United States and other nations.
Sani’s first major concern is for Africans who hope to migrate to the United States. Under Trump’s previous administration, there were numerous restrictions placed on immigration, including the controversial travel ban that targeted several predominantly Muslim countries, including some in Africa.
Sani believes that a second Trump term could see these immigration restrictions return, or even intensify, making it much harder for Africans to immigrate to the US.
“Trump’s presidency will make it difficult for Africans to move to the US,” Sani wrote. “His past policies show a clear pattern of restricting immigration from developing nations.”
During his first term, Trump implemented strict immigration policies, including reducing the number of refugees allowed into the US and increasing the difficulty of obtaining visas. These moves had a direct impact on many Africans hoping to start new lives in the United States. Sani fears that if Trump wins again, Africans seeking opportunities abroad will face even greater hurdles.
Sani also pointed to the plight of migrants from South America, who have historically faced immense challenges under Trump’s leadership. His administration focused heavily on border security and immigration control, leading to the construction of the US-Mexico border wall and a policy of separating migrant families at the border.
Trump’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policies sparked international outrage, and Sani warns that these measures could return in full force if Trump is re-elected. This would likely lead to harsher treatment for migrants from South and Central America who are trying to escape violence and poverty in their home countries.
“Migrants from South America will face even more restrictions and difficulties if Trump returns to power,” Sani explained, predicting that the hardline approach to immigration would intensify.
The United Nations and Its Agencies Will Be Affected
Another area of concern for Sani is the United Nations (UN) and its agencies, which he believes could suffer greatly under Trump’s leadership. During his first term, Trump often expressed disdain for international organizations, including the UN. His administration withdrew the US from several international agreements, including the Paris Climate Accord, and frequently criticized the UN for what he perceived as inefficiency and bias against the US.
Sani fears that Trump’s re-election could weaken the UN’s influence globally. He worries that Trump may withdraw funding from key UN agencies, which would disrupt international cooperation on issues such as health, development, and human rights.
“Trump has always been critical of the UN and its agencies,” Sani wrote. “A second term could see the US reducing its role in global cooperation, which would have devastating consequences for international development.”
Sani also pointed out the potential for strained relations between the US and China, particularly in the business sector. Under Trump’s administration, there was an ongoing trade war with China, resulting in tariffs on billions of dollars’ worth of goods.
If Trump were to win again, Sani predicts that Chinese businesses with ties to the US would continue to face economic challenges. Trade tensions could flare up again, hurting both Chinese and American businesses in the process.
“Trump’s policies have already affected Chinese businesses operating with the US,” Sani noted. “A second term could mean even more economic conflict between the two countries.”
One of the key themes of Shehu Sani’s concerns is the potential for strained diplomatic relations under Trump’s leadership. He highlighted several countries and regions that could face deteriorating relations with the US, including Iran, Cuba, and the European Union (EU).
During his first term, Trump withdrew the US from the Iran nuclear deal, escalating tensions between the two countries. Relations with Cuba also suffered as Trump rolled back many of the diplomatic advances made by his predecessor, Barack Obama. Sani fears that a second Trump presidency could see even more aggressive policies toward these nations.
“US relations with Iran and Cuba are likely to worsen,” Sani warned. “Trump has already shown a willingness to abandon diplomatic efforts in favor of more confrontational policies.”
He also noted the potential for friction between the US and the European Union, as Trump’s “America First” policies could lead to more trade disputes and disagreements on international issues. Relations between the US and its European allies were strained during Trump’s first term, and Sani believes these tensions could return.
Another concern Sani raised is Trump’s approach to international treaties and agreements. Throughout his presidency, Trump showed a willingness to withdraw from international commitments, including the Paris Climate Accord and the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
Sani fears that this trend will continue if Trump wins in 2024, leading to the US abandoning more international agreements. This could undermine global efforts to address pressing issues such as climate change, nuclear disarmament, and human rights.
“Trump’s disregard for international treaties is a threat to global cooperation,” Sani said. “His presidency could weaken efforts to tackle important global challenges.”
Sani also touched on the potential impact a Trump presidency would have on human rights and environmental protection. Trump’s policies during his first term often prioritized economic interests over environmental concerns, leading to the rollback of regulations aimed at combating climate change.
If Trump wins again, Sani believes that environmental protections will continue to be weakened, which could have serious consequences for global efforts to address climate change. He also worries that human rights issues may be sidelined in favor of more nationalistic and economic policies.
“Human rights and environmental protection are at risk,” Sani stated. “Trump’s policies have shown a disregard for these critical issues.”
Finally, Sani expressed concerns about the future of US support for Ukraine. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the US has played a crucial role in providing military and economic aid to the Ukrainian government.
However, Sani fears that Trump’s return to power could lead to a reduction in support for Ukraine, leaving the country vulnerable in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Trump’s past statements about NATO and his reluctance to engage in international conflicts have raised doubts about his commitment to supporting Ukraine.
“Ukraine depends heavily on US support,” Sani explained. “A Trump presidency could change that, putting Ukraine in a difficult position.”
