FCTA to Reclaim Undeveloped Land from Allotees, Says Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCTA), Nyesom Wike, has announced a new policy regarding land allocation in Abuja.

He emphasized that institutions must commit to timely development if they want to receive land.

Wike made this statement during a meeting with a delegation from the University Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

The meeting took place in his office in Abuja on Thursday.

Wike was responding to UBEC’s request for land to build staff quarters in the capital.

He expressed his frustration with institutions that receive land but fail to develop it.

“Most institutions apply for land, you give them land, 20 years, 15 years, no development,” he said.

Wike noted that this negligence leads to the rise of shanties and criminal activity in the area.

He stressed the importance of having an agreement with the FCTA before land allocation.

This agreement must specify that the institution will build within a certain timeframe.

The Minister also pointed out that agencies need to demonstrate their financial capacity to undertake the development.

“If you cannot show that you have the money to develop the land, then you will not get it,” Wike added.

He made it clear that the FCTA will not tolerate land allocations that result in unregulated settlements.

These unregulated settlements attract crime and make the city unsafe.

Wike warned that if agencies fail to fulfill their commitments, the FCTA will reclaim the land.

“The agreement will state clearly the commitment of the agency,” he explained.

“Where the agency fails, FCTA will take back the land.”

Wike’s announcement comes at a time when urban development in Abuja is crucial.

The city has seen rapid growth, but the lack of planning has led to significant challenges.

Residents have raised concerns about increasing shanty towns and safety issues.

Wike’s approach aims to restore order and encourage proper development in the capital.

He believes that by enforcing these rules, Abuja can become a safer and more organized city.

During the meeting, Wike also spoke about the importance of collaboration with educational institutions.

He stressed that education is vital for the development of the nation.

He encouraged UBEC to work closely with the FCTA to improve educational facilities.

Wike’s statement is part of a broader strategy to invite more investment into the FCTA.

Just the day before, he had encouraged investors to consider opportunities in Abuja.

“We are open for business,” Wike stated during a previous event.

He highlighted that the FCTA is committed to creating a conducive environment for investment.

“Investors will find a welcoming atmosphere here, and we have the resources to support them,” he assured.

The FCTA’s new land policy is expected to attract responsible developers who are serious about contributing to the city.

Wike’s administration aims to revitalize Abuja by ensuring that land is used effectively.

He believes that development should enhance the quality of life for all residents.

This new approach may also discourage speculative landholding practices that have hindered progress.

As cities expand, managing land use and ensuring safety become critical.
