The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has firmly warned against calls for a military takeover, declaring that such actions are treasonous and unconstitutional.
This statement comes in response to rumours circulating in the media and on social platforms about the appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), and a viral video advocating for a military coup.
The DHQ has strongly denied the claims of any appointment of a new COAS.
Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the current COAS, is reportedly on a well-deserved annual leave.
Contrary to rumours, there has been no change in the leadership of the Nigerian Army, and General Lagbaja remains in charge of the Army.
“The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, is hale and hearty,” said Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information.
“He is currently on his annual leave and will resume his duties at the end of this period.”
The DHQ emphasized that all military services remain fully operational and that Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, is carrying out the routine responsibilities of briefing the COAS during his absence.
This, according to the DHQ, is in line with normal military procedures.
The statement further cautioned individuals and media organizations against spreading false information that could incite unrest.
Media houses were specifically urged to verify information with the appropriate authorities before publishing stories that could mislead the public.
“Media organisations must desist from circulating fake news. Verify your information before releasing it to the public,” Gusau advised.
He added that spreading baseless rumors about a change in the Army’s leadership only fuels unnecessary panic.
While addressing the rumors about the Army leadership, the DHQ also issued a stern warning to those advocating for a military takeover of the government.
This followed the release of a viral video where certain individuals were seen calling for a coup.
The military condemned these calls in the strongest terms.
“Any individual or group advocating for unconstitutional changes in the country is committing treason,” the DHQ said.
Under Nigerian law, advocating for a coup or military takeover is considered treason, a grave offense that could lead to severe penalties, including life imprisonment.
The DHQ stated that the Nigerian Armed Forces (AFN) remain loyal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and are fully committed to the preservation of democracy in Nigeria.
“The AFN is steadfastly committed to the preservation and advancement of our democracy,” the statement read.
It assured Nigerians that the military’s focus remains on its statutory responsibilities of protecting the nation’s territorial integrity and maintaining peace and security.
“The relative peace being enjoyed today is a direct result of the President’s support for the military and the dedication of the AFN leadership,” Brigadier General Gusau added.
This reassurance from the military comes at a time when rumors of instability and calls for unconstitutional actions have caused concern among many Nigerians.
Nigeria has a troubled history with military coups.
The country endured multiple military takeovers between 1966 and 1999, before transitioning to civilian rule.
Each coup brought disruption and hardship to the nation, making the idea of returning to military rule a highly sensitive issue.
The DHQ’s statement served as a reminder that any attempt to undermine Nigeria’s democracy would be met with swift action.
“The AFN and relevant security agencies have been mandated to take necessary action against anyone advocating for unconstitutional changes,” Gusau said.
In addition to maintaining constitutional order, the DHQ highlighted the military’s ongoing efforts to secure the country from internal and external threats.
With various security challenges, including insurgency, banditry, and kidnappings, the military’s role in maintaining peace and security remains critical.
“We are focused on our duties of defending Nigeria’s integrity and ensuring that citizens can enjoy peace and security,” Gusau noted.
Despite the challenges, the military says it continues to receive support from President Tinubu’s administration, which has prioritized security in its agenda.
The DHQ acknowledged this support and credited it for the relative peace Nigeria is experiencing in many regions today.
In a final note, the military extended its gratitude to Nigerians for their continued support and prayers.
Brigadier General Gusau assured the public that victory is within reach in the ongoing battle against insecurity.
“Nigerians should remain confident. The military is working hard, and we are on the path to victory,” he concluded.
