MTN Nigeria Unveils Eco-Friendly Paper SIM Cards

    Share

MTN Nigeria is taking a bold step towards environmental sustainability by launching its eco-friendly, biodegradable SIM cards.

This groundbreaking move comes as part of MTN’s broader commitment to reducing its environmental impact and aligns with its Project Zero goals aimed at achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.

The new SIM cards, made from biodegradable materials, are expected to play a key role in reducing the company’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contributing to plastic pollution prevention in Nigeria.

MTN’s new paper-based SIM cards are designed to break down naturally over time, unlike traditional SIM cards made from plastic, which contribute to waste pollution and environmental degradation.

These new eco-friendly SIMs not only reduce plastic waste but also promote circularity, meaning that the product can be reused or recycled after its life cycle is over.

MTN is now one of the leading companies in Nigeria to embrace this kind of innovation, further solidifying its reputation as a company dedicated to sustainability.

Speaking about this new development, Tobe Okigbo, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, explained the company’s dedication to protecting the environment.

“Our new eco-friendly SIM cards represent part of our continuous commitment to environmental responsibility,” Okigbo said.

He added that MTN is focused on reducing waste and integrating sustainable practices across all aspects of its operations.

“This initiative shows how we are combining innovation with sustainability, ensuring that our products align with global environmental goals while supporting the growth of the Nigerian economy,” Okigbo noted.

The introduction of biodegradable SIM cards is timely, as plastic waste continues to be a major challenge worldwide.

According to environmental experts, traditional plastic SIM cards are made from Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), which is not only difficult to recycle but also poses a significant threat to ecosystems when disposed of improperly.

These new paper-based SIMs from MTN help tackle this problem by eliminating the need for plastic altogether.

The benefits of these cards are clear: they degrade naturally, reducing the burden on landfills and cutting down on the carbon emissions associated with producing and disposing of plastic products.

Adekemi Adisa, General Manager of Sustainability and Shared Value at MTN Nigeria, also spoke passionately about the initiative.

“Our people and the environment where they live drive the innovative measures we take,” Adisa said.

She explained that the launch of MTN’s eco-friendly SIM cards reflects the company’s commitment to a greener future, while encouraging customers to make eco-friendly choices in their daily lives.

“This is about more than just technology—it’s about creating a better future for all Nigerians by reducing waste and encouraging sustainable practices,” Adisa added.

MTN’s new biodegradable SIM cards are just one part of the company’s larger sustainability goals under its Project Zero initiative.

This project seeks to drastically reduce MTN’s carbon footprint by implementing environmentally friendly practices and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across all its operations.

As part of its efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, MTN has been exploring various ways to minimize its environmental impact, from energy-efficient operations to waste reduction initiatives.

The launch of eco-friendly SIM cards is one of the latest steps in MTN’s journey towards becoming a more eco-conscious company.

For now, the eco-friendly SIM cards are being rolled out as part of a pilot program in select MTN stores in Lagos and Abuja.

Customers in these areas can now experience firsthand how MTN is leading the way in sustainable technology.

This pilot phase will help MTN gather valuable feedback before expanding the eco-friendly SIM cards to other regions across Nigeria.
