In a significant move against separatist and criminal groups in Southeast Nigeria, troops from Operation Udoka have arrested a key figure linked to the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and other suspects involved in cult activities.
This operation took place in various locations, including Orsu in Imo State and Arochukwu in Abia State.
The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, announced the arrests during a bi-weekly briefing at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
High-Profile Arrests of Separatist Leaders
According to Major General Buba, troops successfully apprehended Mr. Pius Iguh, identified as a “founding father” of IPOB and a leader in the group’s armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
This operation was conducted by the Forward Operational Base (FOB) in Orsu.
Buba emphasized the importance of these arrests, stating that Iguh was responsible for activities within the Orsu area.
“This was a significant operation that targets the leadership of IPOB and ESN,” he explained.
Additionally, troops raided a location in Mbano, Abia State, where they captured another IPOB commander, Emmanuel Onwugu.
Cult Leaders Also Arrested
In a separate operation, troops from FOB Amaruku apprehended Ifeanyi Rock, described as a notorious cult leader.
Rock and ten of his commanders were arrested in Arochukwu Local Government Area.
These arrests highlight the military’s focus on both separatist groups and cult activities that threaten the stability of the region.
Major General Buba stated, “We are committed to ridding our communities of these violent groups. The arrest of these leaders is a major step forward.”
Recovery of Weapons and Kidnapping Victims
During these operations, security forces also recovered various weapons and items associated with the arrested individuals.
In addition to the arrests, the military reported rescuing 76 individuals who had been kidnapped.
This reflects ongoing efforts by the Nigerian military to combat insecurity and protect citizens.
“During the week, we neutralized 140 terrorists and arrested 135 individuals involved in criminal activities,” Buba confirmed.
He reassured the public that the military would continue to intensify its efforts in the region.
Combating Crude Oil Theft
The military’s focus is not limited to separatist groups and cult activities.
Major General Buba also provided updates on operations against crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region.
Troops arrested 18 suspected oil thieves and recovered over 1,122,710 liters of stolen crude oil.
Additionally, they seized over 557,210 liters of illegally refined diesel, known locally as AGO.
Buba added that several illegal refining sites had been destroyed as part of the military’s ongoing efforts to curb oil theft, which has significant economic implications for the nation.
