The Labour Party (LP) has publicly disassociated itself from its former National Treasurer, Oluchi Oparah, following serious allegations of fraudulent activities. The party’s publicity secretary, Obiora Ifoh, released a statement on Thursday reiterating that Oparah’s indefinite suspension from the party, initially enacted in November 2023, is still in effect.
The LP’s statement comes amidst accusations that Oparah has been misrepresenting herself as the party’s National Women Leader—a role she has neither held nor sought. Instead, the party alleges that she has fraudulently posed as the National Women Leader at various events to extort money from unsuspecting organizations.
In the statement, the LP clearly expressed its stance: “A person who falsely assumes an identity to deceive others, especially for fraudulent purposes, is an impostor. Ms. Oluchi has been misrepresenting herself as the National Women Leader of the Labour Party to seek financial gain from unsuspecting organizations, which has caused significant embarrassment to the party.”
The party highlighted that the legitimate National Women Leader is Mrs. Dudu Manuga, who is officially recognized and tasked with leading Labour Party women both in Nigeria and internationally. The LP urged the public and various organizations to disregard any claims made by Oparah and to report any instances of her impersonation.
As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how Oparah will respond to the party’s statements and the accusations against her. The Labour Party has called for vigilance among its members and supporters, urging them to report any fraudulent activity or misrepresentation.
