TCN Battles to Restore Power As National Grid Collapes Again

    Share

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported a significant disturbance in the national grid.

The incident occurred around 11:29 AM on Thursday and resulted from a sudden frequency spike, jumping from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz.

This unusual frequency increase caused a partial shutdown at one of TCN’s substations.

In response, TCN immediately initiated recovery efforts to restore electricity across affected areas.

The company reports that power was quickly restored to parts of the Abuja Axis.

Efforts to stabilize the remaining sections of the grid are still underway, according to TCN.

Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, confirmed that the disturbance was being handled with “immediate and intensive recovery efforts.”

She stated, “We are doing everything possible to get the power back up and running across Nigeria.”

This latest incident adds to the challenges already facing Nigeria’s national grid, which has been struggling with instability.

The spike is just one of many issues currently affecting the grid, including ongoing repairs and maintenance work.

Among these repairs is the restoration of the 330kV transmission line along the Shiroro–Mando route, a critical link in Nigeria’s power infrastructure.

Additionally, TCN is undertaking major upgrades at the Jebba Transmission Substation.

Another significant project includes restoring the second 330kV transmission line between Ugwuaji and Apir.

These repairs are part of a broader initiative by TCN to strengthen the grid following several recent collapses.

An investigative report into these previous grid failures identified weaknesses in the system that needed urgent attention.

Mbah added, “Our team is fully committed to ensuring that Nigeria has a stable and reliable power supply.”

However, she also warned that more disruptions might occur as repairs continue.

“While we work on these improvements, we ask for the public’s understanding,” she said.

Nigeria’s power grid has long been a source of frustration for citizens and businesses alike.

Frequent outages have disrupted daily life and hindered economic growth, raising concerns across various sectors.

Electricity supply remains crucial to Nigeria’s socio-economic development, which TCN has recognized in its response.

The company remains optimistic that the ongoing repairs will bring lasting improvements to the grid.

“We are committed to a power system that is more reliable, more stable, and less vulnerable to disruptions,” said Mbah.
