The lawyers representing Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye, a Bolt driver allegedly assaulted by Representative Alexander Ikwechegh, have withdrawn their services, citing concerns over their professional integrity.
In a statement released on Friday, the legal team of Deji Adeyanju & Partners explained their decision after careful consideration, emphasizing the need to uphold their firm’s ethical standards.
Abuwatseye had approached the law firm in late October 2024, visibly distressed, and seeking justice after claiming he was assaulted by Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North/South in Abia State.
“The firm had taken up his case pro bono, with the intention of ensuring that his rights were protected,” the statement explained.
The assault became widely discussed after a viral video showed the altercation between Abuwatseye and Ikwechegh, leading to public outrage. The video prompted the police to arrest Ikwechegh and charge him with assault.
“We have made the decision to withdraw our legal representation in order to protect our professional integrity,” the statement continued. “We wish Mr. Abuwatseye the very best, while we assure the general public of our continued commitment to protecting the rights of the oppressed and indigent members of society.”
The lawyers’ decision has raised many questions. Legal experts have expressed concerns, suggesting that outside pressures may have influenced the firm’s move. The specifics of these pressures, however, were not disclosed.
The withdrawal adds fuel to the already controversial incident. It has left some questioning the handling of the case, with suspicions that political or personal motivations could be at play.
The drama took another turn when, just a day after the video went viral, Representative Ikwechegh publicly apologized for his actions. In a video posted on his social media, he expressed regret and called the altercation an unfortunate misunderstanding.
“I want to apologize to Mr. Abuwatseye, the Nigerian public, the National Assembly, and the Nigeria Police Force for my actions,” Ikwechegh stated. “What happened was wrong, and I take full responsibility for my behavior.”
Ikwechegh’s apology followed his arrest and subsequent arraignment in an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court. He was granted bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties of the same amount. His swift apology, however, has sparked debate, with some questioning its sincerity.
Public opinion on the matter is divided. Many Nigerians are calling for justice, while others have shown support for Ikwechegh’s apology, acknowledging the pressure he may have felt. But the situation remains tense, with concerns over the role of power and influence in the case.
In another unexpected turn, Stephen Abuwatseye, the victim of the alleged assault, has issued an apology of his own. In a video posted on November 8, 2024, he expressed remorse for the altercation and appealed for forgiveness from Nigerians.
“I want to sincerely apologize to Representative Ikwechegh and anyone who was offended by my words and actions during the incident,” Abuwatseye said. “This was a misunderstanding, and I hope that we can move forward in a spirit of unity and forgiveness.”
Abuwatseye also emphasized the need for national unity, urging Nigerians to come together regardless of their ethnic or religious differences and work toward the collective good of the country. He thanked his family and well-wishers for their support during this challenging period.
Abuwatseye’s apology has left many Nigerians puzzled. Some question whether his apology was truly voluntary or influenced by outside pressures, especially after the withdrawal of his legal representation. Others believe he was simply trying to make amends and restore peace in a highly charged situation.
The case has raised difficult questions about the balance of power and justice. While Ikwechegh’s status as a lawmaker has certainly influenced public reactions, many are concerned that Abuwatseye’s apology may have been coerced, undermining the seriousness of the assault.
The withdrawal of legal representation by Deji Adeyanju & Partners has added complexity to the case, raising concerns about the integrity of the legal system. Many are wondering whether the firm’s decision was influenced by political or personal pressures, particularly given Ikwechegh’s position.
