Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has opened up about the unwavering efforts of his late wife, Stella Obasanjo, in securing his release from prison.
Obasanjo shared these emotional memories during the recent inauguration of the 250-bed Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin City, Edo State.
The former president, who was detained during the harsh military rule of General Sani Abacha, recounted how Stella fought tirelessly for his freedom, traveling far and wide to plead his case.
Stella Obasanjo, an Edo State native, later became Nigeria’s first lady after Obasanjo’s eventual release and rise to the presidency.
Obasanjo, now 87, praised his late wife’s bravery and dedication, saying, “My late wife went everywhere to ensure that I came out of prison alive.”
He continued, “She was in Vatican City, France, and other parts of the world. I had it all coming out of prison. No amount of honour would be too much for the role she played.”
The former president was arrested in 1995 under accusations of plotting a coup against the Abacha regime. After Abacha’s sudden death in 1998, Obasanjo was released by the succeeding administration led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar.
Reflecting on Stella’s role in his freedom, Obasanjo expressed gratitude, recognizing her as an instrumental force in his life. “I had a woman who made tremendous contributions to my achievements in public life,” he said.
The inauguration of the Stella Obasanjo Hospital is a tribute to Stella’s legacy, and Obasanjo acknowledged the honor bestowed upon her memory.
“I feel deeply grateful that this hospital has been named in her honor,” Obasanjo said, visibly moved. “It serves as a reminder of her sacrifices and her love for this nation.”
The former president’s words were met with admiration and respect from attendees, who recognized the impact of Stella’s selfless actions.
Obasanjo also praised Governor Godwin Obaseki for his commitment to completing the hospital project. He applauded the governor’s dedication, noting that the hospital stands as a testament to quality healthcare for Edo State residents.
“With this hospital, you’re assured of first-class treatment for any ailment,” he remarked. “More grace to the elbows of the governor. With this kind of edifice, I can say that the governor started well and is finishing well.”
Obasanjo’s words highlighted the importance of the hospital in providing accessible healthcare to the people of Edo State. The new facility is expected to serve thousands of residents, offering vital medical services across various specialties.
In his address, Obasanjo also reminisced about his collaboration with former Edo Governor John Odigie Oyegun, a man he described as an “exceptional permanent secretary.”
He credited the efforts of both past and present leaders in Edo State, who, like Stella, have worked to improve the lives of their people.
