Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has issued a stern warning to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of this weekend’s Ondo State governorship election.
In a statement released by his media aide, Paul Ibe, on Wednesday, Atiku urged the APC to respect the will of the people and allow a fair and transparent election process.
He said the PDP is prepared to resist any attempt by the ruling APC to manipulate the votes in Ondo State, a region where PDP supporters are known for their strong convictions.
Atiku called on the people of Ondo State to come out in full force to vote, stressing that their participation is essential to safeguard democracy.
“This is also a sound warning to all election management officials and volunteers that the PDP will stand firmly against any malpractice in the Ondo governorship election,” Atiku declared, emphasizing the party’s commitment to fair elections.
Atiku’s statement comes at a critical time, as tensions rise in Ondo State, with both parties gearing up for a competitive race. The governorship election is expected to be closely contested, with the PDP and APC both vying for the state’s top seat.
Ondo State has become a political battleground in recent years, with its voters often known for their unwavering stance on political issues. Atiku highlighted this reputation, saying, “When the tide is high, it becomes too big to rig. The people of Ondo State are known for their forthrightness, and this particular election calls for eternal vigilance.”
In his statement, Atiku also pledged that PDP leaders would offer every necessary support to ensure a smooth election process and protect voters from any intimidation or suppression efforts by APC operatives.
“As leaders of the party, we shall provide all necessary support to ensure that the APC is not allowed to repress the wishes of the electorate in this election,” he said, assuring Ondo residents that their votes will be defended.
The PDP candidate’s statement comes amid concerns from political observers that attempts to influence the outcome of the election could disrupt the democratic process. Nigeria has witnessed similar tensions in past elections, where accusations of voter intimidation, vote-buying, and manipulation were rampant.
Atiku’s remarks are aimed at rallying PDP supporters in Ondo State to remain vigilant and ensure that their votes are counted accurately. The former Vice President reminded voters of their power, urging them to participate actively in the election as a way to safeguard their future.
PDP’s stance has been echoed by other opposition leaders, who believe that a credible election is essential for stability in Ondo State. PDP members have also warned electoral officers and volunteers not to succumb to any pressures that could compromise the integrity of the process.
“The people of Ondo deserve a government that reflects their choice, not one imposed through backdoor methods,” said a PDP official who supports Atiku’s call for transparency in the election.
Political analysts suggest that Ondo’s governorship race could set the tone for future elections in Nigeria, making this election highly significant. Many are watching closely to see if Nigeria can overcome the long-standing issues of election malpractice and intimidation.
Atiku’s strong warning to the APC adds to the high-stakes atmosphere surrounding the election. His message is clear: the PDP will not back down in defending the votes of the people of Ondo State.
“We’re sending a message that the PDP is committed to fair play, and we expect the same from the APC,” Atiku said in his statement.
