Meg Whitman, the U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, has announced her resignation after a successful tenure, leaving behind a legacy of strengthened diplomatic, economic, and security relations between the two countries.

In a statement issued on November 13, 2024, Whitman informed her team at the U.S. embassy that she had officially submitted her resignation to President Joe Biden.

“It has been an honor and privilege to serve the American people through strengthening our partnership with Kenya,” Whitman stated, reflecting on her time in office.

Her resignation marks the end of a diplomatic journey that saw significant milestones in the U.S.-Kenya relationship. Whitman expressed pride in her people-centered agenda, which, she said, helped save lives, increase security, and create economic opportunities for both Kenyans and Americans.

Among her notable achievements, Whitman highlighted the U.S. government’s emergency response to catastrophic flooding in Kenya in 2023. She also pointed to her role in supporting Kenya’s ongoing battle against health crises, including malaria, HIV, and MPOX.

“The U.S. government prioritizes the health and welfare of our friends in Kenya,” she remarked.

Whitman also focused on Kenya’s rising economic potential. Under her leadership, U.S. trade, jobs, and investment in Kenya reached historic levels. She spearheaded the “Why Africa, Why Kenya?” campaign, encouraging American businesses to explore opportunities in the East African nation. This initiative contributed to greater economic growth and cooperation between the two countries.

“Through initiatives like the ‘Why Africa, Why Kenya?’ campaign, we engaged American companies to explore business opportunities in Kenya,” Whitman said. “The results have been clear, with U.S. trade and investments at historic highs.”

Another key accomplishment during Whitman’s tenure was the improvement of consular services. She oversaw a reduction in the wait time for non-immigrant visa appointments, which had previously been as long as two years. Under her leadership, the waiting period was reduced to just two months, responding to the rising demand for U.S. consular services in Kenya.

Whitman’s resignation comes as the United States prepares for a change in leadership with the inauguration of a new president in January 2025. She acknowledged the political transition, expressing her best wishes for the incoming administration.

“The American people have spoken, and a new President will be inaugurated in January,” Whitman said. “I wish him and his new team success as they continue to lead our country.”

As she steps down, Whitman expressed gratitude for the friendship and cooperation she received from the Kenyan government and its people.

“I am grateful for the friendship offered by the government and the people of the beautiful Republic of Kenya,” she stated. “Our relations are stronger than ever, and I am confident this trajectory will continue.”

Whitman’s time in Kenya coincided with the country’s designation as the United States’ first Major Non-NATO ally in sub-Saharan Africa, a significant diplomatic achievement. This designation underscored the deepening security and defense ties between the two nations.

“Kenya and the United States stand shoulder to shoulder to protect our shared democratic values and enhance security,” Whitman emphasized. “Our countries are committed to working together to face the challenges of today and the future.”

Her resignation, while marking the end of her time as ambassador, also signals the continued commitment of both countries to advancing their bilateral relationship. Whitman expressed confidence that the embassy team would continue to push forward on the shared goals that have defined U.S.-Kenya relations for years.

“The Embassy benefits from highly skilled Kenyan and American employees who will continue their efforts under the leadership of Chargé d’Affaires Marc Dillard,” Whitman noted. “Together, they will continue advancing our shared goals on which our bilateral relationship has long been grounded.”

In her final remarks, Whitman reflected on the mutual respect and cooperation that has characterized the relationship between the U.S. and Kenya.

“I have been deeply honored to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Kenya,” she said. “The bonds between our two nations are stronger than ever, and I believe they will continue to grow in the years ahead.”
