The Lagos State Government has announced a three-month closure of the Marine Bridge lane outbound Apapa, starting Monday, November 18, 2024, to February 25, 2025.

This closure is for the rehabilitation of the bridge’s asphalt section, and a detailed travel advisory has been issued to guide motorists.

State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.

He emphasized the need for the closure, citing the importance of ensuring the safety and durability of the infrastructure.

Travel Advisory for Motorists

To ease the impact of the closure, motorists traveling to Lagos Island from Apapa are advised to use the Costain Roundabout and proceed via the Eko Bridge.

An alternative route is through Ijora 7-Up to the Marine Bridge, connecting to Ijora Causeway Access Road via Ijora Oloye and then heading to Lagos Island.

For those heading to Ijora Causeway or Iddo, the advised route involves passing through Costain Roundabout, linking Eko Bridge, and accessing Ijora Causeway via the bridge’s access ramp.

Alternatively, they can use Ijora 7-Up through the Marine Bridge to access the ramp connecting Ijora Causeway Access Road and proceed to Iddo.

Traffic Control Measures

To manage the expected traffic disruptions, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will deploy personnel to the diversion corridors.

Osiyemi assured residents that measures are in place to minimize inconvenience and maintain order during the repair period.

“Our officers will be on ground to ease vehicular movement and ensure that the duration of repair works is strictly adhered to,” he said.

The diversion affects only the lane inwards Ijora Olopa, while movement toward Costain via Sifax remains open.

A History of Maintenance Issues

The Marine Bridge is a vital link in Lagos’ transportation network, serving as a key route for commercial and private vehicles traveling between Apapa and Lagos Island.

Over the years, the bridge has suffered wear and tear due to heavy traffic, prompting periodic repairs by the Federal Ministry of Works.

However, some residents argue that the maintenance efforts have been inconsistent, leading to recurring disruptions.

The Lagos State Government is urging motorists to cooperate with traffic officials and adhere to the recommended alternative routes.

“Your patience and understanding are crucial as we work toward improving our road infrastructure,” Osiyemi pleaded.

He reiterated that the project timeline would be closely monitored to ensure timely completion.
