National Library to Unveil 5-Year Strategic Plan for National Development
In a move to revolutionize its services, the National Library of Nigeria (NLN) is set to unveil a comprehensive 5-year strategic plan aimed at transforming the institution into a hub for knowledge, innovation, and national development.
The strategic plan, which will be formally introduced in the coming weeks, is expected to guide the National Library towards improving access to information, preserving the nation’s rich cultural heritage, and contributing to Nigeria’s growth across various sectors.
The announcement comes amid growing recognition of the importance of libraries in fostering education, research, and community development.
The National Library, with branches spread across Nigeria, plays a vital role in providing access to information, preserving historical records, and supporting educational initiatives. However, experts have long pointed to the need for modernization and innovation in the services offered by the library.
Strategic Plan to Transform the National Library
According to Dr. Lanre Akinleye, the Director-General of the National Library, the new strategic plan will address current challenges and push for long-term growth and sustainability.
“We are on the brink of a new chapter in the history of the National Library,” Dr. Akinleye said in an exclusive interview. “This 5-year strategic plan will not only focus on upgrading our infrastructure but also on improving our digital offerings to ensure that we meet the needs of today’s society.”
Dr. Akinleye emphasized that the new plan is a response to Nigeria’s increasing demand for access to modern, reliable, and inclusive information sources. He noted that the country’s library system has been underdeveloped for many years, and this plan is meant to address the gaps that exist.
“The 5-year strategy will make our libraries more accessible and responsive to the educational needs of Nigerians,” Dr. Akinleye said. “We want to create spaces that encourage innovation, research, and the preservation of our cultural heritage.”
Key Focus Areas of the Strategic Plan
The strategic plan is set to focus on several key areas, including infrastructure development, digital transformation, community engagement, and the preservation of Nigeria’s cultural and historical records.
In terms of infrastructure, the National Library plans to upgrade its facilities across the country. Many of the library’s branches are housed in aging buildings that need renovation and modernization to accommodate the growing number of users.

“We must ensure that the library’s digital offerings reach everyone,” said a senior academic in the education sector. “It’s not enough to just digitize the materials; we need to make sure that people have the devices and internet access to benefit from these resources.”
