Governor Dapo Abiodun has vowed to rid Ogun State of all forms of hooliganism and thuggery following disruptions during the recent local government elections in Iperu-Remo. He made this promise while swearing in the newly elected local government chairmen and their deputies on Sunday evening.

“I will not tolerate impunity in any form,” Governor Abiodun declared, promising that those responsible for the chaos in Iperu would face severe legal consequences. His statement came during a reception at the Presidential Lodge in Abeokuta, where the governor hosted the newly elected leaders.

Governor Abiodun’s commitment to maintaining peace and order in Ogun State was clear. He expressed strong disapproval of the violence and disorder caused by individuals who imported unauthorized security personnel to disrupt the electoral process. “Those who attempted to sabotage the election will be brought to justice,” he affirmed.

    Crackdown on Election Violence

The governor condemned the actions of individuals who recruited thugs and unauthorized policemen to cause violence. He revealed that the vice-chairman of a local government in his hometown had even been attacked during the turmoil. “As Chief Security Officer of Ogun State, I cannot stand by and allow such acts to go unpunished,” Governor Abiodun stated firmly.

    A Call for Fair Leadership

He reminded them that their duty was to serve all citizens, regardless of political affiliation. “You are elected to serve everyone, not just those who voted for you,” he emphasized.

Governor Abiodun also outlined his vision for the local governments, urging the chairmen to focus on developing their areas and ensuring that all citizens benefit from the government’s progress. He congratulated them on their election and encouraged them to replicate the state government’s ISEYA vision, which focuses on infrastructure, social development, education, youth empowerment, and agriculture.

“I pray that you use this opportunity to serve diligently. God has chosen you for this responsibility,” Abiodun said. “This is your moment to make a real difference.”

    Delivering the Dividends of Democracy

On Monday, the swearing-in ceremony continued at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Kuto, Abeokuta. Governor Abiodun reiterated that the new chairmen had been given the responsibility to deliver democracy’s promises directly to the people. As the closest level of government, the chairmen were urged to prioritize policies and programs that would improve the lives of their constituents.

“Your job is to implement policies that will directly impact the lives of the people in your local governments,” the governor stated. He also urged the chairmen to collaborate with security agencies, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders to ensure the safety and well-being of their communities.

Unity and Progress for Ogun State

Abiodun further reminded the new leaders to embrace innovation in order to generate revenue for their councils. He emphasized that the success of their tenure would depend on their ability to align with the state’s broader development goals while maintaining peace and stability.
