Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have killed more than 50 Boko Haram terrorists during a daring counter-ambush at Farin-Kasa in Chikun Local Government Area, Kaduna State.
This was confirmed in a statement by the NSCDC spokesperson, Babawale Afolabi, who disclosed that the encounter occurred on Monday evening.
Monitoring Mission Turns Deadly
The operatives were part of a special monitoring squad sent to survey vandalised national grid installations in the Shiroro area of Niger State.
Eighty officers from the Commandant General Special Intelligence Squad (CG SIS) were tasked with assessing the damage, conducting surveillance, and apprehending suspected vandals.
On their return journey, the team was attacked while crossing from the Shiroro axis.
“From the top of a hill at Farin-Kasa, the group opened fire on the NSCDC convoy using sophisticated weapons,” Afolabi said.
Gallant Response to Ambush
Despite the surprise attack, the operatives demonstrated remarkable bravery.
“The NSCDC operatives, though ambushed, were not overwhelmed by the terrorists. They repelled the attack and successfully neutralised over 50 of the terrorists in the crossfire,” Afolabi confirmed.
However, the clash left seven operatives missing, and efforts are ongoing to locate them.
Afolabi added that several officers sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at a medical facility.
NSCDC Chief Reacts
Reacting to the incident, NSCDC Commandant General Ahmed Audi condemned the attack as “callous and unfortunate.”
“This is an attack too many on security operatives who have sworn to defend the country,” Audi said.
He praised the courage and resilience of the operatives, affirming the corps’ pride in their bravery.
“The corps is proud of their unflinching commitment,” he stated.
Strengthening Critical Infrastructure Protection
Audi assured that the NSCDC would not be deterred by such incidents.
As the lead agency in protecting Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI), the corps remains determined to support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The NSCDC will ensure the revival of the power sector for stable electricity supply nationwide,” Audi declared.
Boko Haram Resurgence Sparks Concern
The successful operation highlights ongoing security challenges posed by Boko Haram in Nigeria.
Although security forces have made gains in curbing their activities, the ambush underscores the group’s persistence in targeting both civilians and infrastructure.
Public Reaction
News of the ambush has drawn mixed reactions.
While many Nigerians applauded the NSCDC’s bravery, others expressed concerns about the recurring attacks on security operatives.
The missing officers’ fate remains a source of anxiety, with calls for intensified rescue operations.
