A Port Harcourt-based architect, Engr. Asomba Andrew Egbuonu, has been killed by gunmen in Nnewi, Anambra State.
The incident occurred just four days before the burial of his late mother.
Egbuonu, a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (FNIA), was finalizing arrangements for the ceremony when he was attacked.
Reports indicate that the revered architect sustained fatal gunshot wounds and died on Sunday, November 17, 2024.
The Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) confirmed the tragic event in an emotional announcement.
“It is with a painful and heavy heart that I announce the death of our brother, Arc. Asomba Andrew Egbuonu FNIA,” said Chike Chamberlain Ibeanu, General Secretary of the NIA.
Ibeanu described Egbuonu as a distinguished member and an invaluable contributor to the institute.
Until his untimely death, Egbuonu served as the Chairman of the Architectural Exhibitions and Competitions Committee and was a former Chairman of the NIA Rivers State Chapter.
The late architect was a Knight of Saint John (KSJ) and an admired figure in his community and professional circles.
Ibeanu called for prayers for Egbuonu’s family, urging God to grant them comfort during this difficult time.
“South East Becoming Unsafe”
The killing of Egbuonu has sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning the security situation in Anambra and the South East region.
Social media platforms are abuzz with reactions, some pointing fingers at alleged lapses in security and governance.
“It’s heartbreaking to see an innocent man lose his life like this,” lamented a user on X (formerly Twitter).
Another wrote, “He went home to bury his mother, and now he won’t even get the chance. This is a failure of leadership.”
Some commenters used the incident to stoke ethnic and regional tensions, blaming political and cultural factors for the increasing violence.
Critics argue that the government has failed to address the growing insecurity in the region.
Rising Tide of Violence
Violence in the South East has been on the rise, with incidents often linked to separatist movements and armed groups.
Egbuonu’s death is one of many cases highlighting the region’s volatile situation.
Despite repeated assurances from authorities, residents continue to live in fear.
Analysts warn that unchecked violence could have dire consequences for investments and development in the South East.
A Call for Justice
The tragic death of Egbuonu has drawn calls for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Nigerians are demanding more accountability from the government and security agencies.
“Enough is enough,” said a commenter. “How many more lives must be lost before something is done?”
The NIA and Egbuonu’s colleagues have vowed to honor his memory and advocate for justice.
