PDP Postpones NEC Meeting Again Amid Internal Crisis

    Share

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has once again postponed its highly anticipated National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, adding to the uncertainty plaguing the party.

The meeting, initially slated for November 28, 2024, has been postponed indefinitely.

This marks the fourth delay in what was originally scheduled for August 2024.

    Funeral Ceremony Cited as Reason

In a public notice signed by the PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the party attributed the postponement to the need for leaders to attend the funeral of the late First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Mrs. Patience Umo Eno.

The funeral, which runs from November 27 to 29, coincides with the NEC meeting’s planned date.

The statement explained that the National Working Committee (NWC) prioritized showing solidarity with Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno and his family during their time of loss.

“After due consideration, the NWC, recognising the need for party leaders to commiserate with Governor Eno, hereby notify NEC members that the 99th NEC meeting will now be held on a date that will be communicated to members in due course,” the statement read.

    “Sincere Regret for the Inconvenience”

The notice acknowledged the disruption caused by the change in plans and apologized to members of the NEC.

“All NEC Members should please note the change of date and be guided accordingly. The NWC sincerely regrets the inconvenience this change of date will cause distinguished members of NEC,” the statement added.

    Multiple Postponements Spark Concerns

The NEC meeting has now been postponed four times, fueling speculation about the party’s internal stability.

Originally scheduled for August 2024, it was first moved to September, then October 2, and later November 28.

Each delay has raised concerns about the party’s ability to resolve pressing issues amidst growing factional disputes.

Observers believe the constant delays are a reflection of unresolved tensions among top party leaders.

The NEC meeting is seen as a crucial platform for addressing the party’s internal problems and charting a course for the future.

However, factional disputes and allegations of sidelining have created an atmosphere of distrust.

The instability within the PDP comes at a critical time, as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Analysts warn that if the party fails to resolve its internal crises, it risks losing more ground to its rivals.

“This kind of dysfunction is what costs parties elections,” a political commentator noted.

“The PDP needs to get its act together quickly or face significant losses in 2027.”
