The Enugu State Government has declared its readiness to provide evidence for the trial of Simon Ekpa, who was arrested in Finland on Thursday.

Ekpa is accused of sponsoring terrorism in Nigeria and leading a criminal group known as “Autopilots.”

In a strongly worded statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Enugu condemned Ekpa’s actions and commended Finland’s government for the arrest.

“Ekpa Is a Fraudster and Killer”

The statement described Simon Ekpa as a “common criminal, con man, and terrorist” who has no regard for the well-being of the Igbo people.

“He is a murderer and fraudster, who delights in killing his people and living large off their misery,” the statement read.

The Enugu government accused Ekpa of exploiting the emotions of the Igbo community to enrich himself under the guise of fighting for the restoration of Biafra.

“Ekpa thrives on manipulating, exploiting, and extorting the people while destroying lives, property, and the Igbo trademark of entrepreneurship and hard work,” the statement continued.

    “Evidence Ready for Trial”

The Enugu State Government pledged to support efforts to prosecute Ekpa, whether in Finland or Nigeria.

“Enugu State is ready and willing to provide evidence of Ekpa-sponsored atrocities against Ndigbo to aid his trial and conviction,” the statement affirmed.

The government emphasized that Ekpa’s arrest was a significant step toward restoring peace and stability in the South East.

A Widening Crack in Igbo Unity

Simon Ekpa, a Finland-based self-proclaimed leader of the Biafran separatist group “Autopilots,” has long been accused of inciting violence and spreading fear in the South East.

Ekpa’s activities include enforcing sit-at-home orders, which have disrupted businesses and daily life in the region.

Critics say his campaigns have caused untold hardship and painted the Igbo struggle for self-determination in a negative light.

“His arrest and trial will go a long way in strengthening peace, security, and stability in all parts of the South East,” the statement said.

    Support from Ohanaeze

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has also welcomed Ekpa’s arrest.

The group called it a “victory against terrorism,” stating that it marks the beginning of the end of a reign of terror in Igbo land.

    IPOB Disowns Ekpa

Meanwhile, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the primary Biafran agitation group, has distanced itself from Ekpa.

The group issued a statement clarifying that Ekpa is not a member of IPOB and that his actions do not represent their mission.

“We have always said that Simon Ekpa is not our member,” IPOB declared, further accusing him of tarnishing the group’s image.

    Arrest Sparks Hope for Peace

Ekpa was detained alongside four other suspects in Finland, reportedly on charges of terrorism sponsorship in Nigeria.

His arrest follows months of international outcry and calls for his prosecution.

The Enugu State Government reiterated that Ekpa’s actions have caused untold suffering in the South East, undermining efforts to promote development and peace.

“This arrest is in line with the demand of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, which has repeatedly called out Ekpa’s destructive activities,” Prof. Onyia stated.

    Restoring South East Stability

The Enugu State Government believes Ekpa’s arrest is a turning point for the region.

For years, the South East has struggled with security challenges, including attacks on infrastructure and widespread fear among residents.

“Ekpa’s trial is an opportunity to hold him accountable for the destruction and chaos he has caused,” the government noted.
