A free medical outreach in Abiriba, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, has left several residents hospitalized after they reportedly reacted to medications administered during the program.

The incident has sparked outrage and concern, with state health authorities launching an investigation into the matter.

“Health Commissioner Confirms Adverse Drug Reactions”

Abia State Commissioner for Health, Ogbonnaya Uche, confirmed the disturbing development in a statement issued from Umuahia, the state capital.

The commissioner said the victims suffered from suspected adverse reactions to drugs distributed during the outreach.

“Our healthcare personnel are working tirelessly to stabilize and treat the affected individuals,” Uche assured.

He expressed deep concern over the incident, describing it as a consequence of unauthorized medical activities.

“Outreach Organizers Failed to Get Approval”

The Abia State Ministry of Health disclosed that the organizers of the outreach had failed to obtain the necessary approvals before conducting the event.

This oversight, the ministry said, likely contributed to the tragic outcome.

“We cannot allow unauthorized healthcare events to put the lives of our citizens at risk,” the commissioner warned.

He added that the state government would prosecute anyone found guilty of organizing unapproved medical programs in the future.

    “Residents in Shock Over Incident”

Videos and photos from the scene, which have gone viral on social media, show distressed residents being rushed to hospitals and clinics.

One local, identified as Chidi Nwankwo, described the outreach as a well-advertised event that had drawn large crowds seeking free medical attention.

“We thought it was a blessing for our community, but it has turned into a nightmare,” he lamented.

Nwankwo revealed that some of his relatives were among those hospitalized.

    “State Government Launches Investigation”

The Abia State Ministry of Health has launched a full investigation to determine the causes of the adverse reactions.

The ministry said it would examine the drugs administered, the credentials of the organizers, and the overall safety protocols of the outreach.

“This is a serious matter, and we are committed to ensuring justice for those affected,” Uche stated.

The commissioner also called on residents to verify the legitimacy of medical programs before participating.

    “A Call for Accountability”

The commissioner’s statement hinted at legal action against the organizers of the outreach.

“This government will no longer tolerate such reckless endangerment of our citizens,” Uche declared.

He added that stricter measures would be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
