Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, is set to commission the first phase of a groundbreaking 10,800-bed hostel project.
The initiative, led by the Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, aims to tackle the persistent accommodation challenges faced by students.
Tokunbo Wahab, former Special Adviser to the Governor on Education and current state environmental czar, announced the development through his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Wahab described the project as one of the most ambitious achievements of his tenure, highlighting its success as a testament to the effectiveness of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
“This landmark project, executed under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) arrangement, involved the collaboration of seven reputable investors,” Wahab stated.
“A Landmark Achievement”
The 10,800-bed hostel project represents a significant milestone in LASU’s history.
It demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving student welfare and investing in the future of education in Lagos State.
Wahab attributed the success of the project to the dedication of the LASU management team, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, and the support of key stakeholders.
“Through the grace of God, the unwavering support of the Lagos State Office of Public-Private Partnerships, and the tireless efforts of LASU management, the first phase of this transformative project has been completed,” he said.
A Game-Changer for LASU Students
The project is expected to revolutionize the living conditions of students at LASU.
For years, students have struggled with inadequate accommodation, often resorting to living off-campus under less-than-ideal conditions.
With this development, thousands of students will now have access to safe, modern, and convenient housing facilities on campus.
Wahab expressed his excitement about the milestone, noting that it reflects the administration’s dedication to addressing infrastructure gaps in education.
“Proud of the work done here and to have been a part of this special one,” he added.
PPP Model: A Winning Formula
The success of the hostel project underscores the effectiveness of the PPP model in delivering critical infrastructure.
Under the BOT arrangement, private investors finance, construct, and operate the facility for a specified period before transferring ownership to the government.
This approach reduces the financial burden on the government while ensuring efficient project execution.
Wahab commended the seven investors involved in the project, describing their commitment as vital to its success.
He also acknowledged the leadership of Governor Sanwo-Olu, whose administration prioritized education and youth development.
