Otunba Segun Showunmi, a key political figure and former spokesman for Atiku Abubakar, has ignited controversy with a bold statement calling for tough reforms in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a dramatic speech, Showunmi urged the acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, to make difficult decisions for the survival of the party.
He specifically suggested that sacrificing Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike might be necessary to rebuild the PDP.
“The PDP must reclaim its position as the voice of opposition in Nigeria,” Showunmi declared.
“If sacrificing Wike is what it takes to move the party forward and restore integrity, then so be it,” he added.
The Call for Radical Change
Showunmi’s remarks came during the launch of the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), also known as The Alternative.
The event was a platform designed to address what many see as deepening challenges in Nigeria’s democracy.
Showunmi, speaking with passion, emphasized that the PDP needs to reconnect with its ideological roots.
“The party must regain the trust of Nigerians,” he said.
He called on PDP leaders to be courageous and take decisive steps to reform the party.
According to him, Wike’s continued influence in the party could hinder progress.
Praises for Peter Obi
Showunmi also used the occasion to praise Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party.
He described Obi as a beacon of hope for progressive politics in Nigeria.
“Peter Obi has shown that leadership rooted in clear values and integrity can resonate deeply with Nigerians,” Showunmi said.
He pointed out that Obi’s popularity stems from his commitment to transparency and good governance.
A Challenge for Atiku
Showunmi did not stop at praising Obi.
He also challenged Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and PDP’s presidential candidate, to step up.
“Atiku must rise to the challenge and provide the guidance our country needs,” Showunmi said.
He emphasized the need for Atiku to clearly articulate his stance on critical national issues.
“Nigerians need clarity and consistency in leadership,” he added.
A New Coalition for Change
The launch of the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC) is seen as a significant political development.
The coalition aims to offer a credible alternative to the existing political structures in Nigeria.
It advocates for transparency, ideological direction, and citizen-centered governance.
Showunmi described the coalition as a rallying cry for political reform.
He called on Nigerians to support NOMC in its quest to reshape the country’s political landscape.
“This is the time for Nigerians to demand accountability and reform,” he said.
