Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has dismissed rumours of his death, describing them as baseless and hurtful.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Old Garage-Oke Fia-LAMECO Road in Osogbo, Osun State, Obasanjo expressed shock over the false reports circulating on social media.
The event, held on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, was attended by Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, and other dignitaries.
Social Media Rumours Spark Alarm
Obasanjo revealed that he first learned about the death hoax from a close ally.
“I was called early in the morning by a close friend who asked me to check social media,” he said.
The former president said he was surprised to see reports claiming he had died at midnight.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Obasanjo added.
He immediately informed his family and close associates, assuring them of his safety.
“I told my family and friends not to be alarmed. Those wishing me dead will not have their way,” he declared.
A Message to His Detractors
Obasanjo, speaking in Yoruba, questioned the motives of those spreading such rumours.
“Why would anyone wish me dead?” he asked.
He warned that those harboring such thoughts would face their own misfortunes.
“Those who wish me dead will not escape tragedy themselves,” he said firmly.
The former president also criticized the misuse of social media for spreading false information.
“This kind of rumour is disturbing and shows how some people misuse technology. It is unacceptable,” he said.
Praise for Governor Adeleke’s Achievements
Obasanjo took the opportunity to commend Governor Adeleke for his impressive performance in Osun State.
“When he came on board, some people mocked him, saying he was only good at dancing,” Obasanjo remarked.
“But he has proven them wrong. He is a good dancer and also a good performer,” he added.
Obasanjo predicted that Adeleke would win re-election due to his achievements.
“Governor Adeleke has delivered for the people of Osun, and I believe they will support him again,” he said.
Road Project Commissioned Amid Celebrations
The Old Garage-Oke Fia-LAMECO Road project was officially commissioned during the event.
The road, named after the late Asiwaju of Osogboland, Abdulfatai Adekileku Ajani Badmus, is part of Adeleke’s infrastructure agenda.
Governor Adeleke expressed pride in the project and pledged to continue developing Osun State.
“This road is a testament to our commitment to growth and progress,” Adeleke said.
Commitment to Infrastructure Development
Adeleke assured residents that his administration would complete all ongoing projects.
“Our administration has constructed over 120 kilometers of roads across the state,” he said.
He also highlighted the progress of two major flyover projects in Osogbo and the dualisation of roads in Ile Ife and Ilesa.
“We are focused on completing the Iwo-Osogbo road and other critical projects,” he added.
Adeleke emphasized that all these projects were funded without taking loans.
“We blocked financial leakages and used local content to reduce costs while maintaining high standards,” he explained.
A Legacy of Good Governance
Adeleke pledged to leave a lasting legacy of good governance.
“History should remember us as agents of positive change,” he said.
He reassured the people of Osun State that his government would address both infrastructure and social needs.
“We will strike a balance between hard and soft infrastructure,” he added.
Obasanjo’s Influence and Support
Governor Adeleke expressed gratitude to Obasanjo for his support and advice.
“We are genuinely grateful for your constant guidance,” Adeleke said.
Obasanjo’s presence at the event was seen as a significant endorsement of the governor’s efforts.
A Final Word on Unity and Progress
Obasanjo ended his speech with a call for unity and progress.
“We must all work together to build a better Nigeria,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to ignore divisive rumours and focus on development.
“For those who spread false news, remember: lies may travel far, but truth will always catch up,” he concluded.
