A 38-year-old man, Babafemi Ogundele, has been arraigned at the Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, over a shocking case of fraud.
Ogundele is accused of defrauding one Jacob Joshua of $10,000, an amount equivalent to approximately ₦15 million.
Joshua had entrusted Ogundele with the money as a “proof of funds” to facilitate his travel to the United States.
The prosecutor, Akeem Akinloye, told the court that Ogundele had promised to help Joshua secure the necessary financial documentation.
However, instead of fulfilling his promise, Ogundele allegedly diverted the funds for gambling.
FRAUD AND IMPERSONATION CHARGES
Ogundele faces several charges, including obtaining by false pretence, stealing, threat to life, and impersonation.
Akinloye revealed that Ogundele had presented himself as a medical doctor to gain Joshua’s trust.
He noted that the accused intended to defraud Joshua from the onset.
When Joshua demanded a refund, Ogundele reportedly threatened him.
“The defendant not only deceived the complainant but also put his life at risk by issuing threats,” Akinloye added.
GAMBLING AWAY THE MONEY
The court heard how Ogundele squandered the entire $10,000 on gambling activities.
The prosecutor argued that the defendant’s actions contravened Sections 86(1), 383, 419, and 484 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
Joshua, the victim, had reportedly saved the money over time, hoping it would secure his dream of traveling abroad.
DEFENDANT PLEADS NOT GUILTY
Ogundele pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
His lawyer requested bail, insisting that Ogundele was ready to face the legal process.
COURT GRANTS BAIL
The Chief Magistrate, Olabisi Ogunkanmi, granted Ogundele bail but attached strict conditions.
She set bail at ₦7.5 million, with two sureties in the same amount.
One surety must own landed property within the court’s jurisdiction, while the other must be a blood relative of the defendant.
Ogunkanmi warned that failure to meet these conditions would result in Ogundele remaining in custody.

Speaking to reporters outside the court, Joshua expressed his disappointment and frustration.
“I trusted him with my life savings,” Joshua lamented.
He explained that he had planned to use the funds as proof of financial stability, a crucial requirement for his visa application.
Joshua added, “This was my chance to start a new life. Now, I have nothing.”
