NURTW Leadership Crisis: Union Warns AGF, IGP Against Taking Sides

    Share

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has urged the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to remain neutral in the union’s ongoing leadership dispute.

This call followed a letter from the legal team of Alhaji Tajudeen Baruwa, requesting the enforcement of a court judgment.

The NURTW claims the judgment was obtained through deception.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, Comrade Uwem James, a former National Financial Secretary of the union, criticized Baruwa’s actions.

James described Baruwa’s request as prejudicial, stating it undermines due process while related cases remain unresolved in court.

He emphasized that Baruwa’s tenure ended in August 2023 and accused him of attempting to return to power through manipulation.

“He’s trying to come back through the back door with a judgment he secured by misleading the court,” James alleged.

James provided a detailed account of the leadership tussle, accusing the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) of siding with Baruwa without understanding the core issues.

He revealed that several cases concerning the leadership struggle are still pending at the National Industrial Court in both Lagos and Abuja.

“Applications regarding these matters are still before the courts and yet to be determined,” James added.

    Allegations of Court Order Violations

James accused Baruwa of defying court orders that required all parties to maintain the status quo.

“Despite an injunction, Baruwa went ahead to declare himself president in Lafia on August 23, 2023,” James said.

He described Baruwa’s actions as a blatant disregard for the rule of law.

“It’s ironic that someone who shows no respect for the courts now wants the same courts to enforce orders in his favor,” he added.

James warned that helping Baruwa enforce the disputed judgment would undermine justice.

“It would also risk chaos and a breakdown of law and order within the union and the society at large,” he cautioned.

    Accusations Against Baruwa

James accused Baruwa of playing the victim.

“We know it’s usually the cheated party that cries for justice, but in this case, Baruwa is making the loudest noise,” he said.

He argued that Baruwa’s judgment was obtained fraudulently by suing the wrong parties.

“The cases we filed, which directly challenge his election and actions, are still pending,” James added.

    Appeal for Speedy Trial

James urged the courts to fast-track the ongoing cases.

He specifically mentioned the case marked NICN/UY/27/2023, involving himself and others against Baruwa.

“We believe a speedy trial will provide the final resolution needed for this matter,” James said.

    Implications for Law and Order

James warned that enforcing Baruwa’s judgment could render their pending cases useless.

He also highlighted the potential for unrest if the situation is not handled carefully.

“Letting Baruwa enforce this judgment may lead to chaos,” James said.

He stressed the importance of fairness and adherence to the rule of law.

“The AGF and IGP must resist any pressure to take sides,” James advised.

    Union’s Stance on Justice

James insisted that Baruwa must face the pending cases before claiming any leadership rights.

“Those who seek equity must come with clean hands,” he said.
