Passengers on a Max Air flight, including Borno State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Usman Kadafur, narrowly escaped a disaster when the aircraft’s engine caught fire mid-air.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, shortly after the plane took off from Maiduguri International Airport.
Reports indicate that the flight, bound for Abuja, faced trouble about 10 minutes into its journey.
A bird strike was identified as the cause of the engine failure, which led to the fire.
Eyewitnesses described how panic swept through the cabin as the aircraft began to shake.
“The plane suddenly made a sharp movement, and we could smell something burning,” a passenger recounted.
The pilot acted swiftly and successfully landed the aircraft back at Maiduguri Airport, averting a potential tragedy.
An anonymous Max Air staff member confirmed the incident, emphasizing the crew’s quick response.
“The pilot’s professionalism ensured that everyone on board remained safe,” the staff member said.
Passengers, however, were visibly shaken after the emergency landing.
Many opted not to continue their journey that night.
“I can’t believe I’m alive,” a visibly emotional passenger said while collecting her luggage.
Max Air management wasted no time in addressing the situation.
Another aircraft was dispatched from Kano to transport passengers, including Deputy Governor Kadafur, to Abuja later that night.
Those who decided to fly again commended the airline’s prompt response but expressed lingering fears.
The grounded aircraft is currently undergoing extensive repairs at Maiduguri International Airport.
The airline has launched an investigation into the incident.
Airport officials also reassured the public of their commitment to safety.
“We are grateful to the crew for handling this situation with utmost professionalism,” an official said.
Safety experts highlighted that bird strikes, though rare, can be dangerous, especially during takeoff and landing.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is expected to join the investigation.
Calls for improved bird control measures around airports have since intensified.
This incident comes at a time when concerns over aviation safety in Nigeria are mounting.
Recent months have seen increased scrutiny of airlines and airport operations.
Passengers are now demanding stricter safety protocols and maintenance checks.
For Max Air, this incident will undoubtedly prompt a thorough review of its safety procedures.
The airline has assured the public that passenger safety remains its top priority.
Meanwhile, passengers affected by the incident are still coming to terms with the close call.
