In a decisive move, the Nigerian Senate has summoned the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, alongside airline operators, to address the growing crisis of flight delays and cancellations across the country.
The Senate’s decision follows a motion presented on Wednesday by Abdulfatai Buhari, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation.
Buhari expressed deep concern over the increasing disruptions in air travel, emphasizing their negative impact on Nigeria’s economy and social development.
“These delays are not just an inconvenience but a serious impediment to the country’s progress,” Buhari stated.
He highlighted that air travel is a crucial mode of transportation for business, official duties, and time-sensitive engagements.
Impact on Socio-Economic Growth
Buhari pointed to numerous media reports documenting the frequent disruptions caused by airline operators.
He warned that if left unchecked, these issues could hinder Nigeria’s efforts to attract foreign investment and diversify its economy.
“Air travel is essential for timely execution of business and official engagements,” he said.
The lawmaker added that the aviation sector must meet global standards to support the country’s development goals.
The Senate noted that persistent flight delays undermine Nigeria’s credibility and deter investors from doing business in the country.
Call for Accountability
Buhari reminded the Senate that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is empowered by law to regulate the industry.
According to him, the NCAA must ensure that airline operators adhere to international standards and provide fair services to passengers.
The lawmakers stressed that consumer protection in the aviation industry is paramount.
They cited Part 19 of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority Regulations of 2023, which outlines passengers’ rights to compensation for delays and cancellations.
However, enforcement of these regulations remains a challenge.
“Many Nigerians are unaware of their rights and continue to suffer without redress,” Buhari lamented.
The Senate called on the NCAA to enforce these regulations and hold airlines accountable for their actions.
Minister Keyamo to Face Senate Questions
Following the motion, the Senate officially summoned Keyamo, the Director-General of the NCAA, airline operators, and other key stakeholders for questioning.
The lawmakers intend to seek explanations for the persistent delays and find lasting solutions to the crisis.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the situation as unacceptable and urged the stakeholders to prioritize the welfare of passengers.
“The Nigerian people deserve better,” Akpabio declared.
The Road Ahead
The Senate’s intervention marks a significant step in addressing the challenges facing Nigeria’s aviation sector.
With Keyamo and airline operators set to appear before the lawmakers, many Nigerians hope for meaningful reforms.
The Senate has also tasked the NCAA with increasing public awareness about passengers’ rights and enforcing compensation regulations.
“We need to restore confidence in our aviation sector,” Buhari concluded.
As the country looks to improve its transportation infrastructure, all eyes will be on the upcoming Senate hearing.
