Troops of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) have rescued 25 kidnapped victims and neutralised three bandits in a daring offensive in Kaduna State.
The operation, code-named Golden Peace, targeted criminal hideouts in Kauru Local Government Area.
The raid, launched early Tuesday morning, was aimed at dismantling bandit networks terrorizing the region.
An intelligence source revealed that the operation began around 6:00 a.m.
Troops moved swiftly, clearing bandit strongholds in villages like Ruwan Sanye, Randa, Rafin Gora, Libere Gari, and Libere Makaranta.
The mission encountered stiff resistance in Randa Village, where armed bandits engaged the troops in a fierce gunfight.
Three bandits were neutralised during the clash, while others fled into the surrounding forest.
The fleeing criminals abandoned their kidnapped victims in the chaos.
Among the 25 hostages rescued were women, children, and men who had endured days of captivity.
One of the survivors described their experience as “a nightmare we thought we would never wake from.”
The bandits escaped with injuries, according to reports, leaving behind traces of their hurried flight.
Troops discovered items such as roasted chicken, tramadol, cigarettes, energy drinks, and clothing at one of the bandits’ temporary camps.
Further pursuit revealed an illegal clinic hidden in the forest, used by the criminals to treat injured members.
The makeshift facility was destroyed to prevent the bandits from receiving medical aid in the future.
Major-General John Enenche, spokesperson for Operation Safe Haven, described the operation as “a critical step in restoring peace to Kauru LGA and ensuring the safety of its residents.”
He praised the troops for their bravery, saying, “The courage and professionalism displayed by our forces in this operation are commendable.”
Residents of the affected communities expressed relief and gratitude to the troops.
A local leader, Alhaji Umaru Garba, said, “We have lived in fear for too long. This is a victory not just for the army but for the people.”
Kaduna State has been plagued by banditry, with criminals carrying out kidnappings, attacks, and extortion.
The state government has called for continued military action to root out the threat.
In a statement, Governor Uba Sani commended the troops for their efforts, urging them to maintain pressure on the criminals.
“These bandits have no place in our society,” the governor declared. “Their reign of terror must come to an end.”
The rescue operation highlights the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s northern region.
Despite government and military efforts, banditry remains a major problem, with thousands displaced and livelihoods destroyed.
Military officials have vowed to sustain operations like Golden Peace to restore normalcy in affected areas.
“We are committed to ensuring that communities can live without fear,” Major-General Enenche affirmed.
The rescued victims are now receiving medical attention and support to help them recover from their ordeal.
