Seventy-seven Nobel laureates have united in opposition to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s nomination as the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Their objection is rooted in Kennedy’s controversial anti-vaccine stance and lack of qualifications for the critical role.
In an open letter sent to the U.S. Senate on Monday, the Nobel winners warned that Kennedy’s appointment could jeopardize public health.
“Placing Mr. Kennedy in charge of DHHS would put the public’s health in jeopardy,” the letter stated.
This letter was signed by some of the most prominent names in science, including Drew Weissman.
Weissman, who won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine, played a pivotal role in developing the mRNA vaccines that helped combat COVID-19.
A Controversial Pick by Trump
Kennedy, the nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy, was nominated by President-elect Donald Trump.
The environmental lawyer, with no medical background, previously ran a failed presidential campaign before endorsing Trump.
Trump, in turn, has chosen Kennedy to lead the department responsible for the nation’s health policies.
However, Kennedy’s nomination has raised alarm among experts due to his long history of spreading vaccine-related misinformation.

Kennedy is well-known for his claims linking vaccines to autism, despite overwhelming scientific evidence disproving the connection.

“In addition to his lack of credentials or relevant experience in medicine, science, public health, or administration,” the letter argues, “Mr. Kennedy has been an opponent of many health-protecting and life-saving vaccines, such as those that prevent measles and polio.”
Senate Faces a Critical Decision
Kennedy’s nomination requires Senate approval to proceed, as mandated by the U.S. Constitution.
The Nobel laureates urged the Senate to reject his appointment to safeguard public health.
“We strongly urge you to vote against the confirmation of his appointment,” the letter concluded.
Kennedy, however, has defended his nomination, claiming he will bring “fresh ideas” to the department.
Not the First Controversial Pick
Trump’s cabinet selections have drawn significant criticism beyond Kennedy.
Pete Hegseth, a Fox News anchor nominated for Secretary of Defense, faced derailment due to allegations of sexual assault and excessive drinking.
Similarly, Trump’s initial pick for Attorney General, Matt Gaetz, withdrew after accusations of inappropriate relationships with a minor surfaced.
