The Federal Government has announced a free train service for Nigerians during the festive season.
This service will run from December 20, 2024, to January 5, 2025, across the country.
Alhaji Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, revealed this during a briefing at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
He explained that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to ease the financial burden on Nigerians.
“The President understands the challenges posed by high transportation costs, especially for the most vulnerable citizens,” Idris stated.
He reminded Nigerians that similar free transport initiatives were implemented last Christmas and during the Sallah festivities.
“This year, Mr. President has again approved free transport services nationwide to ensure Nigerians travel with ease during the Yuletide season,” Idris added.
The announcement has been met with mixed reactions from the public, with some commuters expressing relief and others questioning the sustainability of such programs.
A Lagos resident, Mrs. Bisi Adewale, said, “This is a blessing. Many families struggle to afford travel during Christmas, and this will allow us to reunite with loved ones without worrying about money.”
However, critics argue that the government should focus on long-term solutions to Nigeria’s transportation challenges rather than temporary relief measures.
The FEC also used the meeting to commend President Tinubu for his leadership over the past 18 months.
The Council highlighted his efforts to stabilize the economy and alleviate the struggles of Nigerians in the face of rising costs of living.
Idris reaffirmed the commitment of the Council to support Tinubu’s programs and policies.
“Members of the FEC are united in their resolve to back Mr. President’s leadership and his agenda for national growth,” he stated.
As part of its end-of-year activities, the FEC announced that it would proceed on recess from December 18, 2024, to January 6, 2025.
This period, according to Idris, will allow government officials to recharge for the tasks ahead in the coming year.
