The South-South Youth Wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has expressed strong support for former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mike Okiro to become the next President-General of the prestigious Igbo socio-cultural organization.
Chief Chinedu Arthur-Ugwa, the Coordinator of the South-South Youth Wing, made this announcement while addressing the press in Owerri on Wednesday.
Arthur-Ugwa praised Okiro as a highly qualified candidate for the role, which will become vacant when Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu’s tenure ends on January 10, 2025. Chukwu was appointed to lead Ohanaeze Ndigbo following the death of former President-General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.
Speaking to reporters, Arthur-Ugwa emphasized that the South-South youths had carefully evaluated Okiro’s leadership track record and found him to be the perfect fit for the position.
“We, the Ohanaeze South-South youths, consider Okiro as a father figure, mentor, leader, and achiever. His leadership qualities and achievements speak volumes,” he said.
Okiro, who served as Nigeria’s IGP, is seen as a figure of national importance. He is known for his professional integrity, leadership skills, and deep connection to the Nigerian people.
Arthur-Ugwa expressed confidence that Okiro, with his vast experience, would unite the Ohanaeze and continue the legacies of the late leaders. The South-South youths pledged their full support, promising to rally behind Okiro’s candidacy.
“We believe that Okiro, with his experience and exposure, has what it takes to carry the mantle left by our former leaders,” Arthur-Ugwa said.
As part of their support, the youth wing vowed to fund the purchase of Okiro’s nomination form. This move signifies the seriousness of their endorsement and their determination to see Okiro succeed as Ohanaeze President-General.
Chukwu, the current President-General, was appointed after the deaths of two influential leaders of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Prof. George Obiozor and Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who both passed away in the last two years. Chukwu is currently holding the position temporarily until the completion of the Imo tenure.
Arthur-Ugwa also noted that the South-South, which is set to produce the next President-General, found it most appropriate to support Okiro, who hails from Rivers State. The region has had a historical connection to the Ohanaeze leadership.
“With the ceding of the position to Rivers State, it is only right that we, the South-South, back Mike Okiro for the presidency of Ohanaeze,” he stated.
The youth leader praised the leaders of Ohanaeze for their swift decision in appointing Chukwu, ensuring a smooth transition of power. He expressed hope that the leadership would continue to promote unity and progress within the organization.
Okiro, if elected, would take on the challenge of leading a deeply influential organization that represents the interests of the Igbo people both in Nigeria and abroad. The President-General of Ohanaeze holds a significant role in advocating for the socio-cultural, political, and economic interests of the Igbos.
Arthur-Ugwa’s support for Okiro signals a clear desire for strong leadership, experienced governance, and a leader who can command national respect. It also highlights the South-South’s commitment to contributing positively to the future of Ohanaeze and Igbo unity.
The youth wing’s endorsement comes at a critical time when the Ohanaeze is undergoing a phase of transition. The position of President-General is one of the most influential roles within the Igbo community, and the next leader will be tasked with steering the organization through challenging times, especially with the passing of two prominent leaders.
The South-South region, which has seen significant political and economic developments in recent years, is positioning itself to play a major role in shaping the future of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. The endorsement of Okiro is a strategic move to ensure that the South-South’s interests are adequately represented within the organization.
The youth wing’s declaration of support for Okiro is also an acknowledgment of his extensive career in public service, particularly his time as the Inspector-General of Police, where he gained widespread recognition for his dedication and professionalism in service to the nation.
“We are confident that Okiro’s leadership will bring positive change and foster greater unity among the Igbo people,” said Arthur-Ugwa.
In addition to his leadership qualities, Okiro is also admired for his commitment to the security and well-being of Nigeria, having served in one of the country’s most important security roles. His candidacy, therefore, is seen as one that combines experience in governance with a deep understanding of national issues.
The South-South youths’ pledge to support Okiro is a clear signal of the region’s desire to maintain strong leadership in Ohanaeze and ensure that the organization remains a force for good in Nigeria’s socio-political landscape.
As the race for the next Ohanaeze President-General heats up, all eyes are now on the potential candidates, with Okiro emerging as a leading figure.
With the January deadline for Chukwu’s tenure fast approaching, the process of electing a new President-General is set to become one of the most closely watched events within the Ohanaeze community.
The endorsement by the South-South youths could prove pivotal in determining the direction of the organization, with many now looking to Okiro for leadership in the years to come.
As this endorsement unfolds, the future of Ohanaeze Ndigbo looks poised for a new chapter, with the support of South-South youths behind Okiro.
