A storm of controversy has erupted in Abuja following the release of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Makinde Vincent, who spent weeks in leg chains at the Asokoro Police Station.
The officer, who had been detained since November 11 for an undisclosed offence, was granted bail on Wednesday after public outcry and intervention by renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN).
The case, which shocked Nigerians, highlights growing concerns over human rights abuses within the Nigeria Police Force.
“He Was Shackled Like a Criminal”
A viral video, shared widely on social media, showed the officer with chains binding his legs—a sight that drew outrage across the country.
Falana, who spearheaded the campaign for Vincent’s release, described the act as “a gross violation of his fundamental rights.”
Speaking on Monday, Falana said, “He has been detained at Asokoro Police Station since November 11 for an undisclosed offence. His legs have since been chained in custody.”
The lawyer called the act “inhumane and unjustifiable,” urging the police to investigate the circumstances of Vincent’s detention.
Outcry Over Police Abuse
Nigerians have expressed anger at the treatment of ASP Vincent, who, ironically, is a serving officer in the Force Headquarters’ FED OPS Department.
“This is a disgrace to the Nigeria Police Force,” said Bisi Ajayi, a human rights activist in Lagos. “How can a serving officer be subjected to such barbaric treatment?”
The incident has raised questions about internal disciplinary measures within the police, with many calling for reforms to prevent such abuses.
“We Demand Accountability”
ASP Vincent’s plight became a national issue after Falana’s petition to the police authorities went public.
The petition included disturbing details and a photograph sent by a concerned officer who had witnessed Vincent’s ordeal.
“A fellow police officer who took pity on the detainee has just sent his picture to me,” Falana revealed.
In the petition, Falana demanded Vincent’s immediate release and a thorough investigation into the dehumanisation he endured.
“This act is illegal, cruel, and a violation of his dignity as a human being,” Falana added.
Authorities Respond, But Questions Remain
Following mounting pressure, the Nigeria Police Force granted Vincent bail on Wednesday.
Sources confirmed his release, with one insider, Godiya, telling SaharaReporters, “The officer was granted bail yesterday.”
However, efforts to obtain comments from Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, were unsuccessful. Calls to his phone went unanswered, leaving many questions about the Force’s internal processes.
A Pattern of Abuse?
This case is not an isolated incident, according to experts who have documented similar abuses within the police.
“This incident highlights the systemic issues within the police force,” said Dr. Kelechi Okafor, a criminologist at the University of Abuja. “We need stronger oversight mechanisms to prevent such cases.”
In recent years, Nigeria’s police have faced criticism for excessive force, unlawful detentions, and human rights violations. The #EndSARS protests of 2020 brought these issues to the forefront, forcing the government to promise reforms.
But critics argue that progress has been slow, with cases like Vincent’s showing that abuses persist.
Public Demands for Justice
The public has called for accountability in the wake of Vincent’s ordeal.
“What kind of example are we setting when those tasked with upholding the law become its victims?” asked Emeka Eze, a legal analyst in Abuja.
Many Nigerians are now demanding that those responsible for Vincent’s treatment face disciplinary action.
“The police authorities must ensure that this does not go unpunished,” said Amina Musa, a member of the Nigerian Bar Association.
Falana Leads the Fight
For Falana, Vincent’s case is another chapter in his decades-long fight for human rights in Nigeria.
Known for his unwavering advocacy, Falana has taken on cases involving police brutality, unlawful detentions, and violations of constitutional rights.
“Cases like this remind us why the fight for justice must continue,” Falana said in a statement on Thursday.
He has vowed to follow up on Vincent’s case to ensure that justice is served.
