United Nigeria Airlines has confirmed a major disruption in its operations following an alarming incident at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

A passenger allegedly physically assaulted a crew member just before a flight was set to depart. The flight, which was scheduled to take off from Lagos to Asaba, Delta State, was delayed for several hours on Thursday, December 19, 2024, due to the violent altercation.

The airline issued a statement on Thursday confirming that the unruly passenger’s actions caused significant delays.

“We deeply regret notifying the general public that our Lagos-Asaba flight, originally scheduled for 6:30 am on Thursday, December 19th, was delayed due to an unfortunate incident involving unruly passengers,” the statement read.

United Nigeria Airlines explained that the passenger’s behaviour led to a commotion on board, which continued for an extended period, even after all passengers had boarded and the aircraft doors were securely shut.

The airline made it clear that, in line with international aviation protocols, the aircraft was grounded for safety reasons, causing the hours-long delay.

“Unfortunately, this disruption may have reverberating effects on other flights across our network, and it may lead to more delays and cancellations,” the statement continued.

The assault on the crew member was described as a serious offence under international aviation law, with the airline emphasising that such actions are strictly prohibited.

“We understand and respect our passengers’ right to express their concerns,” the airline said. “However, it is important to emphasise that any form of physical or verbal assault against any crew member is a serious offence under international aviation laws and is strictly prohibited.”

The airline added that the assault not only endangered the safety of everyone on board but also led to a disruption of other passengers’ travel plans.

The airline’s statement stressed that there are proper channels for passengers to air grievances. It urged passengers to make use of customer service hotlines or online feedback forms rather than resorting to physical or verbal aggression.

“Such behaviour disrupts not only the flight but also the safety and comfort of other passengers,” the statement said.

“At United Nigeria Airlines, safety is not just a priority but the very foundation upon which our operations are built,” it concluded. “We take all necessary measures to ensure the well-being of our passengers and crew.”

The incident, which took place during a busy travel period, has raised concerns over passenger behaviour in Nigerian airports.

Passengers and aviation experts have weighed in, with some expressing concerns about the impact such incidents can have on flight schedules and the broader aviation industry.

“This kind of behaviour is unacceptable. It creates unnecessary delays and inconveniences for other passengers,” said an aviation expert who wished to remain anonymous. “More needs to be done to ensure that both crew members and passengers feel safe during their flights.”

United Nigeria Airlines has apologised for the disruption, assuring the public that they are taking all necessary steps to address the incident. The airline has also pledged to continue prioritising the safety of its passengers and crew.

“We sincerely appreciate your understanding and patience during this time. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation,” the airline concluded.
