As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, a significant development has emerged, with 78 associations applying to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for registration as political parties.

A senior official at INEC, who requested anonymity, revealed the news to the Sunday Tribune in Abuja. The source explained that the commission is currently processing these applications to determine which of the associations meet the eligibility requirements for registration as political parties.

According to the source, the selection process involves a detailed examination of each association’s application. “It is after this rigorous scrutiny that the commission will decide which associations qualify for registration,” the INEC official stated.

Eligibility Requirements for Political Party Registration

To be eligible for registration, each association must meet several strict requirements. These include having a national presence, with the National Executive Committee (NEC) reflecting the Federal Character principle. The NEC must consist of members from at least 24 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Additionally, the associations must submit their constitutions and manifestos, which must align with the objectives of the Nigerian Constitution. The names, acronyms, symbols, and mottos of the associations must not violate the Constitution or the Electoral Act.

The INEC Guidelines for Political Parties also stress that the constitution and manifesto of any association must conform to the Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy as outlined in Chapter II of the Constitution. Furthermore, the application process includes verifying whether any false information has been provided or if there are multiple submissions by the same individuals. If any of these issues are identified, the application will be invalidated.

A Glimpse at the Current Political Landscape

Currently, 19 political parties operate in Nigeria. This number increased from 18 in July 2023, when INEC reversed the deregistration of the Youth Party following a Supreme Court ruling. This move underscores the importance of ensuring all parties meet the constitutional and legal requirements to operate within the country.

As Nigeria heads towards the 2027 elections, the growing number of political parties reflects the increasing diversity in the political space. This is especially evident in light of the deepening fractures within the two major opposition parties, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Coalitions and New Alliances Forming

In response to these internal dissensions, there are discussions among key figures within these opposition parties about forming a united front against the ruling APC. Sources have confirmed that some factions are considering merging into a single political party outside of the existing three major opposition groups. This would allow them to present a more formidable challenge to the APC in the upcoming elections.

The prospect of new political parties and coalitions emerging adds an exciting dynamic to Nigeria’s political landscape. Many Nigerians are eagerly watching to see which associations will be granted party status and how the political competition will unfold.

Public Reactions and Expectations

Nigerians have expressed mixed opinions on the surge in applications for political party registration. Some see it as a positive step, believing that more parties could lead to a greater variety of political choices for voters. Others worry that the proliferation of parties might lead to fragmentation and confusion during elections.

“More parties mean more choices,” says Grace Adebayo, a political analyst based in Lagos. “But it also means we might have to deal with the issue of too many candidates, which could split the vote.”

Meanwhile, some critics have pointed to the lack of clear ideological differences between many of these new associations. “We need parties that have clear policies and values, not just names on paper,” said Tunde Ogunleye, a university lecturer in political science.

The Role of INEC in Ensuring Free and Fair Elections

INEC has a crucial role in ensuring that only legitimate and viable political parties are allowed to contest in elections. The commission’s ability to carefully vet the 78 associations applying for registration will be vital in maintaining the credibility of the electoral process.

INEC’s guidelines for party registration include a thorough review process, which ensures that only those associations with the proper legal, organizational, and constitutional framework can become political parties. This is crucial for preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring that the 2027 general elections are free, fair, and credible. As part of its efforts to improve the electoral process, INEC has also been focusing on voter education and encouraging Nigerians to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). According to recent data, over 2.2 million Nigerians have already collected their PVCs in preparation for the upcoming elections.
