No Registration, No Food Distribution: Lagos Moves to Prevent Tragedy at Charity Events

The Lagos State Government has rolled out new rules for distributing food and other essential items to vulnerable residents.

These measures are aimed at preventing deadly stampedes during charity events, which have claimed lives in other parts of the country.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, announced the directives in a statement, emphasising the need for order and safety.

“Lagos State government has observed with serious concern the stampede during philanthropic gestures of individuals and organisations in some parts of the country,” Omotoso said.

He added that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives caused by such incidents.

“To prevent similar occurrences in Lagos State, all individuals or groups that intend to distribute items to large gatherings of people are advised to seek clearance from the Lagos State Safety Commission,” Omotoso explained.

According to the government, all food distribution events must now be registered with the Lagos State Safety Commission.

The process, officials say, involves obtaining clearance through the commission’s online platform, www.lasgsafetyreg.com.

This platform will streamline the process and ensure that events are organised under strict safety protocols.

“Any group that flouts these measures will surely face the legal consequences of its indiscretion,” Omotoso warned.

He noted that the government is working closely with security agencies to manage crowd control at such events.

The new rules follow reports of deadly stampedes at charity events in other states.

In October, eight people lost their lives during a food distribution event in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Similarly, earlier this year, a stampede in Kano claimed the lives of six individuals, including children.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, in his statement, expressed sympathy for families affected by these tragedies.

“The loss of innocent lives is a painful reminder of the need for proper planning and crowd management during charity events,” he said.

The government has activated its safety mechanisms to prevent future incidents in Lagos.

Omotoso revealed that Mr. Governor has summoned a meeting of all safety agencies to discuss strategies for improving public safety.

He also highlighted ongoing advocacy efforts against other risks, including fire and flooding.

“These measures are part of a broader initiative to safeguard the lives and properties of Lagos residents,” Omotoso said.

The Lagos State Government has assured residents that these measures are not meant to stifle charity but to prevent unnecessary loss of lives.

“Philanthropy should bring joy, not sorrow,” Omotoso said.

He called on individuals and organisations to comply with the new rules, adding that collaboration is key to ensuring public safety.
