A heated controversy has erupted over an empowerment programme attended by Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, in Ogun State.
Critics have accused organisers of using members of the Nigerian Armed Forces to mount a guard of honour for the younger Tinubu. The allegation has sparked widespread debate, with some questioning the appropriateness of such an event.
However, Comrade Olamide Lawal, National President of the APC Youth League and Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Youth Development, has strongly denied the claim.
Paramilitary Group, Not Soldiers
In a statement titled “A Rebuttal to the Misguided Criticisms of Seyi Tinubu’s Honour in Ogun State,” Lawal clarified that the honour guard was not performed by the military.
Instead, members of a paramilitary organisation called the Cadet Network-Nigeria, Ogun State Command, were responsible.
“This group is affiliated with the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) and operates similarly to organisations like the Boys Scouts and Boys Brigade,” Lawal explained.
He added that such displays are common during youth events, serving as a motivational tool to inspire others.
“It is unfortunate that some individuals are twisting this event into a negative narrative for petty political reasons,” Lawal lamented.
An Event Focused on Youth Empowerment
The event, organised by the CityBoy Movement, was aimed at empowering young people in Ogun State.
Seyi Tinubu, a prominent figure within the group, reportedly distributed ₦500,000 each to hundreds of beneficiaries to support small-scale businesses.
Comrade Lawal commended Tinubu for his dedication to youth development.
“This is a landmark event, showing the commitment of a young leader to improving the lives of our people,” Lawal said.
Critics Slam Event as ‘Political Showmanship’
Despite the defence, critics have accused the organisers of engaging in political showmanship.
They argue that the event was an attempt to elevate Seyi Tinubu’s public profile using state resources.
Opposition figures have described the honour guard as unnecessary and claimed it created the impression of military endorsement.
One political analyst, who chose to remain anonymous, remarked, “In a country like Nigeria, where symbolism matters, such gestures can easily be misinterpreted.”

In his statement, Lawal called on Nigerians to support positive initiatives instead of spreading “misinformation and negativity.”
“As a society, we should be promoting a culture of empathy, understanding, and constructive criticism,” he urged.
He argued that the backlash was politically motivated and aimed at discrediting the efforts of young leaders like Seyi Tinubu.
