The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Transportation, has announced the commencement of a 50% transportation discount for 144 routes across Nigeria. The scheme, designed to ease travel for Nigerians during the festive season, kicks off on Tuesday, 24th December 2024.
In a statement from Olujimi Oyetomi, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry, it was confirmed that Senator Said Alkali, Minister of Transportation, would officially launch the 2024 Yuletide Road Transportation Palliative. The initiative will support Nigerians traveling to visit loved ones during Christmas and the New Year.
The transportation unions involved, including the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), God is Good Motors (GIGM), and the Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria (ALBON), have been directed to ensure that buses are positioned at designated loading points on December 24th.
The buses will depart daily from Abuja’s Eagle Square at 6:00 a.m. and from Lagos’s Oshodi terminals (Terminal 3 for northern routes and Terminal 2 for southern routes). Additionally, some buses will be departing from Oshodi between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. for passengers heading to various destinations.
Passengers will pay only half the usual fare, with the scheme set to run from December 24th, 2024, to January 5th, 2025, covering a total of 13 days. The initiative includes 708 vehicles operating on 144 routes, excluding Anambra, where Onitsha will be the point of departure.
