The festive spirit in Anambra State took a chilling turn on Christmas Eve when unknown gunmen abducted Hon. Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Onitsha North Local Government Area. As the state reels from the shock of the abduction, the police have reported a breakthrough in their investigation with the recovery of Azuka’s Ford car.
The vehicle was found abandoned along Upper Iweka Road in Onitsha, a bustling commercial hub notorious for its mix of high activity and security challenges. The discovery was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Anambra State, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement released on Thursday.
Police Operations Intensify
Ikenga disclosed that police operatives attached to the Inland Town Division have been working tirelessly to locate the abducted lawmaker. “The recovery of the vehicle followed an intense ongoing operation by police operatives,” Ikenga explained. He added that a separate rescue team, tasked with combing strategic areas, had spotted the abandoned car during their patrol.
He further emphasized that the Commissioner of Police in Anambra, CP Aderemi Adeoye, has directed all rescue teams to redouble their efforts. “The Commissioner has charged the deployed rescue team to intensify efforts for the possible rescue of the Honourable member,” Ikenga stated.
Abduction Shocks the State
Azuka’s abduction has cast a shadow over the Christmas celebrations in Anambra. Residents, particularly in Onitsha, have expressed concern about the rising insecurity in the state. While kidnappings have been a persistent issue in some parts of Nigeria, the abduction of a high-profile lawmaker has reignited debates about the government’s ability to protect citizens and public officials alike.
A trader at Upper Iweka, who identified himself simply as Chukwuemeka, described the incident as “worrisome.” “If a lawmaker can be kidnapped just like that, what about ordinary people like us? We are not safe,” he lamented.
Unclear Motives Behind the Abduction
As of the time of filing this report, the kidnappers have not contacted Azuka’s family or made any ransom demands public. This has left room for speculation about the motive behind the abduction.
Security experts have suggested that such incidents are often financially motivated, with ransom demands typically following within days. However, others have warned that it could also be politically driven, given Azuka’s status as a serving lawmaker.
An anonymous police source hinted at the possibility of the abduction being linked to political rivalries or disputes. “We cannot rule out anything at this stage. The timing and target are too specific to ignore potential political undertones,” the source said.
Security Concerns in Anambra
This incident has once again highlighted the growing insecurity in Anambra State, which has grappled with issues ranging from armed robbery to cult clashes. The state government has been under pressure to enhance its security architecture, particularly in urban areas like Onitsha, where crime rates are reportedly higher.
A security analyst, Dr. Ifeanyi Okafor, described the situation as a reflection of broader security lapses across Nigeria. “What we are witnessing in Anambra is not an isolated case. The inability of security forces to preempt and prevent such incidents shows a systemic failure,” he remarked.
Okafor also criticized the reliance on reactive measures rather than proactive strategies. “Recovering the vehicle is good, but it doesn’t solve the problem. The abductors are still out there, and the lawmaker is still missing,” he said.
Call for Action
In the wake of the abduction, civil society groups and local leaders have called on the government to prioritize security. The President of the Anambra Youth Vanguard, Mrs. Nkechi Oguegbu, issued a statement urging the state government to collaborate more effectively with security agencies.
“We cannot keep living in fear. The government must invest in surveillance technology and community policing to curb these heinous crimes,” Oguegbu said. She also called on citizens to cooperate with the police by providing any information that could aid in the rescue of Hon. Azuka.
A Pattern of Violence?
This is not the first time Anambra has made headlines for violent crimes. In recent years, the state has witnessed a spate of high-profile kidnappings and violent attacks. The abduction of Azuka serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by public officials and ordinary citizens alike.
Just last month, a prominent businessman was abducted in a similar fashion while returning from a late-night meeting. Although he was eventually released after an undisclosed ransom was paid, the incident left his family traumatized and raised concerns about the effectiveness of law enforcement.
Government’s Response
In response to the growing insecurity, the Anambra State Government has pledged to increase funding for security agencies and deploy more personnel to flashpoints across the state. However, critics argue that such promises often fail to translate into tangible results.
Governor Charles Soludo has reiterated his commitment to tackling crime and ensuring the safety of all residents. “We are working closely with security agencies to make Anambra a safe haven for everyone. Criminal elements will have no hiding place,” Soludo declared in a recent press briefing.
