Social media influencer Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has found himself at the center of a cyber-heist drama after ₦180 million was allegedly stolen from the account of his newly launched NGO, the Martins Vincent Osei Initiative.
The startling revelation came on Friday when VDM took to Instagram to share the ordeal with his followers. “I’ve not been myself these past few days,” he admitted in a visibly distressed state. “Somebody hacked into the NGO website, and ₦180 million is missing. Thankfully, we’ve tracked the person, and one suspect has been arrested.”
How It Happened
According to VDM, the hacking incident led to the diversion of funds into an unknown account, leaving only ₦20 million intact. The account has since been placed on Post No Debit (PND) to prevent further losses. “We’re heading to Jos to recover the money,” he added, expressing hope for a swift resolution.
In response to the breach, VDM announced that the NGO’s app had been temporarily shut down for maintenance and security upgrades. He assured his supporters that updates on the recovery efforts would be shared soon.
A Promising Start Shaken by Cybercrime
The Martins Vincent Osei Initiative, which was launched in October, had received overwhelming public support, raising over ₦30 million within hours. The NGO’s mission to empower underprivileged Nigerians had attracted significant attention, including a staggering ₦100 million donation from music mogul Michael Collins Ajereh, better known as Don Jazzy.
Don Jazzy’s contribution made headlines at the time, with many lauding the gesture as a major boost for the initiative. Now, questions linger about whether this donation was among the funds stolen.
Cybercrime: A Growing Concern
This incident underscores the rising threat of cybercrime in Nigeria, where online fraud and hacking incidents have become increasingly sophisticated. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reported in 2023 that cyberattacks targeting financial institutions and NGOs had surged, leading to billions of naira in losses annually.
Speaking on the issue, cybersecurity expert Dr. Funmi Adeyemi emphasized the importance of robust security measures for online platforms handling large transactions. “Cases like this are a wake-up call. NGOs and businesses must invest in advanced cybersecurity solutions to protect donor funds and sensitive information.”
Community Outrage and Support
VDM’s followers have reacted with a mix of outrage and solidarity. Many took to social media to express their support for the influencer, urging authorities to ensure the culprits are brought to justice. Others questioned the vulnerability of the NGO’s platform and called for greater transparency in the recovery process.
“This is heartbreaking,” wrote one user on Twitter. “VDM has been a beacon of hope for many, and this setback is deeply unfair.”
Another user commented, “I hope Don Jazzy’s contribution is safe. This is why cybersecurity should never be an afterthought.”
The Bigger Picture
The Martins Vincent Osei Initiative’s vision to transform lives through education, health, and economic empowerment programs remains intact despite the setback. In his video, VDM reassured his audience of his commitment to the cause. “We will not let this stop us. The fight continues, and I will keep everyone updated.”
The influencer’s resolve reflects the resilience often needed in Nigeria’s NGO sector, where challenges ranging from funding gaps to fraud can hinder progress. Experts have called for tighter regulations and support systems to help NGOs navigate such issues.
