Anambra Insecurity: Popular Catholic Cleric Tells Soludo to Step Down

    Share

The escalating security crisis in Anambra State has drawn sharp criticism from one of its prominent clerics, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma, popularly known as Ebube Muonso, who has called for the resignation of Governor Chukwuma Soludo. Speaking during his New Year message, Fr. Obimma did not mince words, stating that the government’s failure to address insecurity has left citizens vulnerable and disillusioned.

“Even heaven is not happy with the current state of affairs in Anambra State,” Fr. Obimma lamented, as he highlighted the government’s inability to ensure the safety of residents. He specifically referenced the kidnapping attempt of a fellow priest, Rev. Fr. Nonso, who narrowly escaped abduction after returning from abroad. “It is heartbreaking that priests, ordinary citizens, and prominent figures alike are no longer safe,” he added.

    A Call for Accountability

The fiery cleric, who serves as the Spiritual Director of the Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry in Uke, Idemili North Local Government Area, expressed disappointment with Governor Soludo’s administration. According to him, the governor has failed to utilize the state’s resources effectively to tackle the worsening security challenges.

“Building roads is not enough,” Fr. Obimma asserted. “The security vote should be used to provide adequate protection for the people. If Governor Soludo cannot fulfill this primary duty of governance, then he should resign immediately.”

His critique extended beyond the government, as he urged prominent Anambra indigenes to rise to the occasion. He specifically called on influential figures such as Arthur Eze, Obi Jackson, Obi Cubana, Val Ozoigbo, Senator Victor Umeh, Ada Umeoji, and musician Flavour to step up and contribute meaningfully to addressing the state’s security challenges.

“These individuals have the resources and influence to make a difference,” he said. “They cannot sit on the sidelines while our state continues to suffer. It is time for collective action.”

    Anambra’s Rising Security Concerns

The security situation in Anambra has been a growing concern for residents. Reports of kidnappings, armed robberies, and clashes between vigilante groups and criminals have painted a grim picture of a state struggling to maintain law and order. Fr. Obimma’s outburst reflects the frustration of many Anambra citizens who feel abandoned by their leaders.

Governor Soludo, who took office in 2022 with promises of robust economic reforms and improved security, now faces mounting criticism over his administration’s inability to curb violence. Residents have questioned how the state’s substantial security vote is being utilized, with many feeling that they have seen little improvement in their safety.

Fr. Obimma’s warning that “inaction will have dire consequences” resonates with many, especially as the state continues to grapple with high-profile abductions and attacks. The lack of visible results from security initiatives has only deepened public discontent.

The Cleric’s Track Record of Advocacy

Known for his outspoken nature, Fr. Obimma is no stranger to holding political leaders accountable. Over the years, he has used his platform to advocate for justice, equity, and good governance in Anambra State. His New Year message was not merely a condemnation but also a rallying cry for citizens to demand better from their leaders.

“Anambra people must rise up and make their voices heard,” he urged. “We cannot continue to suffer in silence while our leaders fail us. The time for action is now.”

Insecurity in Anambra is part of a broader challenge affecting several states in Nigeria. From banditry in the north to militancy in the Niger Delta, the country has struggled with various forms of violence, often exacerbated by weak governance and inadequate security infrastructure. While Anambra has historically been considered one of the more stable states in the southeast, recent developments suggest that it is no longer immune to these challenges.

Governor Soludo, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), entered politics with high expectations from citizens. His administration’s focus on infrastructure and economic development initially garnered praise, but the security lapses have overshadowed these achievements. Critics argue that the government’s failure to prioritize security is undermining its overall agenda.

    Calls for Collaborative Solutions

In his message, Fr. Obimma emphasized the need for collaboration between the government, private sector, and community leaders. “Security is everyone’s responsibility,” he said. “We cannot leave everything to the government. Business leaders, traditional rulers, and community groups all have roles to play.”

He proposed that prominent Anambra citizens pool their resources to create a dedicated fund for security initiatives. He also called for increased support for local vigilante groups, which have been instrumental in combating crime in rural areas.
