The Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) has announced its readiness to combat the rising wave of insecurity in Anambra State by reclaiming the state’s forests from the grip of criminal elements. This bold declaration comes amidst escalating violence, including the recent gruesome killings and abductions in the region.
The Commander of the NFSS Anambra State Command, Destiny Jonas, revealed the agency’s commitment during a press briefing in Abuja, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “The safety of Anambra citizens is our priority. We are fully prepared to collaborate with the state government to dismantle the criminal camps operating within our forests,” Jonas stated.
Anambra Under Siege
Anambra has recently witnessed a spate of violent incidents that have left communities reeling. The abduction of a state lawmaker, the killing of a Catholic priest, and the attack on Chigbonu village in Ihiala, which claimed eight lives on December 30, 2024, underscore the severity of the crisis.
These attacks, attributed to unknown gunmen, have heightened fears among residents and prompted calls for decisive action. Investors have also reportedly started pulling out of Anambra, citing the deteriorating security situation as a major deterrent.
Jonas described the dire situation as a wake-up call for coordinated efforts between government agencies and security outfits. He highlighted the NFSS’s unique expertise in forest operations, stating, “Our operations are mostly in forests and bushes. We understand the terrain and are equipped to gather intelligence to neutralize threats in these remote areas.”
Collaborative Security Efforts
The NFSS Commander expressed support for the state government’s Operation Udo Ga Di Na Anambra Security Initiative, which seeks to address insecurity in the hinterlands. According to Jonas, the initiative presents an opportunity for multi-agency collaboration to ensure its success.
He emphasized that NFSS operatives have already been instrumental in securing areas like Achala, Igbariam, and Nsugbe during the festive season. “Many of these remote areas remained hitch-free because of our men stationed there. However, we must intensify efforts to secure all identified flashpoints across the state,” he explained.
Jonas also called for official recognition and government support for the NFSS to enable the agency to launch large-scale operations in known criminal hotspots. “We are ready to rescue Anambra’s forests from these elements, but we need the authorities to give us the green light for massive operations,” he added.
Rescuing Kidnapped Victims
Amidst the challenges, the NFSS has recorded some successes, including the rescue of several kidnapped victims during the yuletide. These operations have demonstrated the agency’s capacity to work alongside other security outfits to protect lives and property.
Jonas assured residents that the NFSS is committed to making Anambra’s forests safe from all forms of criminal activities, including kidnappings, deforestation, and banditry. “Our goal is to ensure that these forests, which should be sources of economic growth, are not turned into hideouts for criminals,” he affirmed.
Commendations and Support
The NFSS Commander extended his gratitude to Dr. John Metchie, the Deputy Commander-General of NFSS in charge of Intelligence, for his unwavering support. “Dr. Metchie is a true enigma, dedicated to the safety of Anambra citizens and Nigerians at large,” Jonas remarked.
He also praised the NFSS Commander-General, Dr. Joshua Osatimehin, for fostering unity and cohesion within the service. Jonas urged the state government to recognize the contributions of these leaders and support the agency’s efforts to combat insecurity.
A Call for Action
As the NFSS prepares to launch its offensive against criminal elements in Anambra, Jonas reiterated the importance of government backing. “We have identified flashpoint areas and are ready to declare total war on these criminal camps. All we need is permission and collaboration with other agencies,” he said.
The NFSS’s proactive stance has been met with cautious optimism by residents, who have long clamored for solutions to the insecurity plaguing their communities. For Anambra, reclaiming its forests may be the first step towards restoring peace and attracting much-needed investment.
