Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has issued a stern vow to track down those responsible for a deadly attack at a burial in Ihiala, promising a N10 million reward for actionable information on each suspect.

The violent incident, which took place last Monday at Umuike village in Ubahuekwem, Ihiala, shattered a solemn ceremony, leaving seven people dead, including two security operatives. Armed assailants targeted the event, sparking fear and mourning across the community.
During a condolence visit to the family of Mrs. Bridget Akanma Onuchukwu, whose burial was overshadowed by tragedy, Soludo condemned the attack as a heinous act against humanity. Addressing the grief-stricken family, the governor extended his sympathies, emphasizing that the government would stop at nothing to ensure justice.

“This tragedy is deeply painful and unacceptable. Those responsible for this heartless act will not evade justice,” Soludo assured. “The state is working tirelessly to bring them to book. Nobody involved will escape,” he added.
In his resolve to bring the perpetrators to justice, Soludo announced a significant bounty. “A reward of N10 million will be given to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of each of the suspects,” the governor declared.

The governor explained that the measure underscores the government’s commitment to the safety and security of residents, noting that security operatives are already working to identify and apprehend the attackers.

He appealed to the public to come forward with credible information to help capture the suspects. “Together, we can rid our communities of such heinous criminals. Your cooperation is invaluable,” Soludo urged.
Ihiala, a usually quiet town, has been left in shock following the audacious attack. Witnesses recounted the chilling sequence of events as the armed assailants opened fire, scattering mourners and causing chaos. Among the dead were community members and security personnel stationed to maintain order during the burial.

The attackers reportedly fled the scene towards the Local Government Headquarters, leaving a trail of sorrow and anguish. The bereaved families are now grappling with the sudden loss of loved ones in what should have been a dignified farewell.

Speaking to the press, a relative of one of the victims lamented the insecurity threatening the state. “This was a burial meant to honor our mother, but it turned into a nightmare. We plead with the government to act swiftly and decisively,” the individual said.
The attack highlights persistent security challenges in parts of Anambra State. Criminal gangs have often targeted vulnerable communities, and Ihiala has seen its fair share of incidents in recent times.

Governor Soludo has consistently prioritized security in his administration, implementing measures to combat crimes, including community-policing strategies and leveraging technology. The Ihiala incident, however, underscores the ongoing need for vigilance and investment in security infrastructure.

During his visit, Soludo disclosed plans to bolster security arrangements in Ihiala and neighboring areas. “We are discussing an enhanced security strategy for Ihiala. Measures will be unveiled soon,” he revealed, offering reassurance to anxious residents.
Community leaders and advocacy groups have also called for collective action to address insecurity. “The attack on innocent people is a call to action for all stakeholders. It’s time to reinforce partnerships between citizens and security agencies,” said Chief Arinze Nwankwo, a local community leader.

Religious leaders in the state also weighed in, condemning the violence and calling for prayers. “This is a moment of grief and reflection. As we mourn the victims, let us unite in faith and support efforts to combat evil in our midst,” urged Reverend Father Emeka Igwe of the Ihiala Diocese.
The tragedy in Ihiala has reignited discussions on Anambra State’s broader security challenges. Soludo, since his assumption of office, has taken a hands-on approach to tackling issues of banditry and violent crime, often engaging directly with affected communities.

Under his administration, Anambra has witnessed crackdowns on criminal hideouts and the introduction of patrol teams in crime hotspots. Experts believe these steps are laying a foundation for long-term stability but stress the importance of sustained efforts and collaboration with federal security agencies.
Governor Soludo’s visit and the promise of justice have provided a measure of comfort to the grieving families and communities. His firm stance signals hope that the perpetrators will be caught and serves as a warning to those who thrive on violence.

As the government and security agencies intensify efforts to address insecurity, residents of Ihiala and Anambra at large will look to see these promises translated into tangible outcomes.

“This is our home, and we must protect it together,” Soludo said. “Justice will be served, and together we will ensure that peace reigns again.”
