The Amananaowei of Ofoni Federated Community in Sagbama Local Government Area, His Royal Highness Auditor Onakpohor, has died in a tragic road accident while traveling with a delegation to meet Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State. The incident, which occurred on Friday, January 3, 2025, has plunged the state into mourning.
The accident happened on the Sagbama-Ekeremor road when the vehicle carrying the paramount ruler and 12 other traditional leaders veered off the road and somersaulted. Eyewitness accounts suggest the vehicle lost control before skidding into the bush near the Sagbama community.
Immediate Rescue Efforts
Survivors were rushed to the Sagbama General Hospital for emergency treatment. According to an official statement from the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, “The injured were stabilized at the Sagbama General Hospital, and those with severe injuries were later transferred to the Niger Delta Teaching Hospital in Okolobiri.” Unfortunately, HRH Onakpohor did not survive the crash, succumbing to his injuries shortly after.
The delegation was on its way to Governor Diri’s residence in Sampou for a New Year visit led by the immediate past governor and current senator representing Bayelsa West, Chief Henry Seriake Dickson. The tragic news prompted Governor Diri to immediately cancel the scheduled event.
Governor Diri’s Reaction
Expressing his sorrow, Governor Diri extended heartfelt condolences to the late monarch’s family and the Ofoni Federated Community. “This is a painful loss, not only to the Ofoni community but to the entire state. HRH Onakpohor was a respected leader whose wisdom and contributions to traditional leadership will be deeply missed,” the governor said through his spokesperson.
Diri also expressed sympathy for the other victims and their families, wishing the injured a swift recovery. “We stand with the affected families in this moment of grief and pray for the quick healing of all those injured,” he added.
A Loss Felt Across Bayelsa
The late HRH Onakpohor was known for his dedication to the cultural and socio-economic development of the Ofoni Federated Community. His leadership played a significant role in fostering unity and progress within the Sagbama Local Government Area.
Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who is also a native of Ofoni, was among the first to visit the accident scene and the hospital. “We have lost a father figure and a pillar of our community. His absence will create a void that will be hard to fill,” Ewhrudjakpo remarked.
Royal Delegation’s Mission
The royal delegation was part of an annual tradition that sees prominent leaders of Bayelsa West visiting the state governor to mark the New Year. Led by Senator Dickson, the team aimed to discuss ongoing development projects and strategies for improving the region’s infrastructure and governance.
Sources close to the delegation revealed that the accident occurred just a few kilometers from Sagbama, a town that has faced road safety concerns in recent years.
Road Safety in Bayelsa Under Scrutiny
This tragedy has reignited discussions about the state of roads in Bayelsa and the larger Niger Delta region. The Sagbama-Ekeremor road, where the accident took place, has long been a source of concern for travelers due to its narrow lanes and lack of adequate maintenance. Residents have repeatedly called for increased investment in road infrastructure to prevent such incidents.
A local resident, Mr. Ebikeme John, lamented the poor condition of roads in the area. “Our leaders need to do more to ensure the safety of road users. This is not the first time we are witnessing such an avoidable tragedy,” he said.
Mourning Across the State
The news of HRH Onakpohor’s death has sent shockwaves through Bayelsa’s traditional and political communities. Messages of condolence have poured in from various quarters, including lawmakers, traditional rulers, and civil society leaders.
Chief Benson Ebi, a leader in the community, described the late monarch as a “bridge builder” who worked tirelessly to foster unity among his people. “He was not just a king but a unifying force in Bayelsa. His death is a colossal loss,” Ebi said.
A Call for Reflection
Governor Diri’s administration has called for a moment of reflection, urging stakeholders to prioritize road safety and infrastructure development. “As we mourn this great loss, let us also commit to ensuring safer roads for all Bayelsans,” the governor stated.
In honor of the late monarch, the Bayelsa State government has pledged to support the Ofoni Federated Community during this difficult time. Plans for a state-sponsored funeral are reportedly underway, although details are yet to be announced.
Legacy of HRH Onakpohor
HRH Onakpohor’s reign as the paramount ruler of Ofoni was marked by his advocacy for peace and development. Known for his accessibility and wisdom, he was a beloved figure whose contributions to traditional governance earned him respect across Bayelsa.
As the state prepares to bid farewell to a royal father, many hope his death will spark renewed attention to the safety and welfare of those who serve as custodians of Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
