A joyous naming ceremony turned sour for an Ogun State resident, Akintoye Waris, who is now in police custody for allegedly stealing and slaughtering a goat valued at N200,000. The goat was reportedly used to prepare meals for his daughter’s naming ceremony, leaving the community in shock.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the arrest on Thursday, January 2, 2025, through its spokesperson, Omolola Odutola. Waris, along with an accomplice, Ajayi Yusuf, is accused of invading a farm in Odeda Local Government Area on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024.
According to the police, the farm owner, identified as Mark, had taken his cattle out for grazing when the suspects allegedly struck. Upon returning, Mark noticed that one of his prized he-goats was missing. A frantic search ensued within the community, with villagers rallying to locate the stolen animal.
“Several villagers reported seeing two men transporting a goat on a motorcycle,” Odutola revealed. Acting on this information, detectives from the Odeda Division launched an investigation. The breakthrough came when the suspects were apprehended a week later in the early hours of January 2.
Suspects Confess to Theft
During interrogation, Waris and Yusuf reportedly admitted to stealing the goat. They detailed how they carried out the act, transported the goat, and eventually slaughtered it two days later. “The goat was used to prepare food for the naming ceremony of Akintoye Waris’s daughter, which was held at Olodo,” Odutola disclosed.
The suspects, now in custody at the Divisional Crime Branch, are said to be cooperating with police investigations. Authorities have assured the public that the matter will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted. “The suspects will face trial once the investigation is concluded,” Odutola added.
A Community Outraged
The incident has sparked outrage among residents of Odeda. Many have condemned the act as a breach of trust and decency, especially during a festive season meant for goodwill and celebration. A local resident, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed disbelief at the crime. “Imagine stealing someone’s goat to celebrate your own joy. It’s disgraceful,” he said.
Others in the community have commended the police for their swift action in apprehending the suspects. “This will serve as a lesson to others who think they can steal and get away with it,” another resident remarked.
Goats: More Than Livestock
In many Nigerian communities, goats are not just livestock but symbols of wealth and cultural significance. During festive seasons, they are often used in traditional ceremonies, celebrations, and feasts. The stolen goat, valued at N200,000, represents a significant loss for its owner, both financially and culturally.
This case highlights the vulnerabilities faced by rural farmers who rely on their livestock for livelihood. Cases of theft, particularly during festive periods, are becoming increasingly common. Community leaders have called for stronger security measures to protect farmers and their assets.
Legal Repercussions Await
Legal experts have weighed in on the potential consequences for the suspects if found guilty. According to Nigeria’s criminal laws, theft involving property valued above a certain threshold can result in significant penalties, including imprisonment.
The Ogun State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice in the case. “We want to assure the public that justice will be served. This will send a clear message that such acts will not be tolerated,” Odutola stated.
Naming Ceremonies in Nigerian Culture
Naming ceremonies hold special importance in Nigerian culture. Families often gather to celebrate the arrival of a newborn, with traditional meals, prayers, and festivities marking the occasion. However, for Waris, the joy of his daughter’s naming ceremony has been overshadowed by his alleged criminal actions.
A social commentator, Ishola Aluko, noted the irony of the situation. “Naming ceremonies are meant to bring blessings and joy, but now this man is facing disgrace and legal troubles. It’s a lesson in doing things the right way,” she said.
Call for Better Community Engagement
This incident has also highlighted the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in addressing crime. The swift reporting of the goat theft and the villagers’ assistance in providing leads played a crucial role in the suspects’ arrest.
Police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly. “The role of the community cannot be overstated. Together, we can build safer neighborhoods,” Odutola emphasized.
An Ongoing Investigation
As investigations continue, the Ogun State Police Command has promised to provide updates on the case. The suspects remain in custody, with the potential for a court appearance in the coming weeks.
This story serves as a cautionary tale for individuals tempted to engage in criminal activities, especially during moments meant for joy and celebration. It also underscores the importance of upholding ethical values and respecting the property of others.
